Introduce Yourself!

Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Morning all

I just want to introduce myself to your community, I hope you don't mind.

yesterday was the first 'fast' day for me, I've decided to try the 5:2 with one day being a Monday & the second either Wednesday or Thursday depending on my weekly diary.

My motivation is to find a routine that I can stick to for a healthy, simple lifetime and 5:2 (or 6:1 eventually) looks like just what I've been looking for.

By way of background, I'm 48, male and lost 8st 7lb four years ago on Lighter-Life. This was way above my expectations & I found the weight loss easy once I have my mindset right (I'm a black & white thinker around food), but in all honesty lost ~ 2st more than was really good for me.

Now I have put back on 4st in 4 yrs, which I'm not overly upset about but I do want/need to lose 21-28lb to be at the mid of my 'healthy' range (although that's still overweight re BMI - I used to play rugby & enjoyed weight training when I was younger so I'm not too stressed about BMI numbers).

So my initial target is June when I have a big holiday for my 25th Wedding Anniversary (4 x 'firsts') and whilst I would not be unhappy going at my current size I feel motivated to shed the few extra lbs before & after going.

Yesterday was easy tbh. I missed breakfast & just had water for lunch (although there were chocolates & biscuits at my morning meeting) and had a weight-watchers recipe chicken & broccoli stir-fry for dinner. My old LL habit of having a black decaf when getting home from work worked nicely (I have been snacking whilst preparing dinner (fool)) but the distraction was fine & I actually felt pretty good about myself throughout the day.

I'm not good at calorie counting, restraining myself with small portions etc so the regimentation of 5:2 should work for me, lets hope.

Anyway, here I am - I look forward to meeting you all and sharing in your journeys over the coming months.

Hi Beagle and welcome

If you can lose 8+ stone (wow) you will find this way of life easy! I think that the potential to adapt it to maintain weight is incredibly attractive as the other diets don't really seem to be able to achieve this. As you say it is easier to be "black and white" about food than just to cut down a bit.

Do have a wander around the forum, especially the FAQ, the progress tracker and the recipes.

See you around!

Thanks both, it's the 'lifelong learning' that really appeals (although the thought of a drastic 'diet' also doesn't fill me with happy thoughts) so the 5:2 regime sound ideal & something I think I could stick to on a permanent basis.

I've read the book (I like to analyse) and can rationalise how it works, but still can't quite believe that "you can eat/drink anything" on feast days. This really does sound too good to be true...

Still, I'm happy to give it a go, and TBH knowing I'm following a 'plan' means I'm much more likely to stick with it as there's structure rather than simply cutting back :)

I'll have a good look around the forum & probably start a diary as I found on LL this also helped keep my resolve.

See you soon

You really can eat/drink anything but not any amount! Naturally if you binge you won't lose weight but as long as you are sensible it really does work!
