Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!
If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!
The rules for the fast diet are really simple: 500 cals for a woman and 600 for a man over a calendar day. So no it doesn't matter what you eat.
It may make a difference to you though what you eat and when you eat it. The experience of many of us is that it is best to eat as little possible (or nothing) until the evening, and also to keep as far as possible off carbs, especially simple carbs, on a fast day. It might also be healthier.
But the important thing is to find a way that works for you and that you can sustain. The beauty of the fast diet is that the discipline is only required for 2 days and even within those it is flexible as to what/when you eat.
And most of us find it gets easier after the first few weeks, so if you have a tough day, stick with it because it will get easier. Your body has some bad habits to unlearn first!
Welcome to the boards!
It's the high GI carbs (sugar, white bread/pasta/rice, fruits that are high in sugar) rather than all carbs that are the problem. So, many people choose things like porridge for breakfast as it contains complex carbs that do fill you up OK.
But even so, many (most?) people find lots of vegetables to fill you up for not many calories plus enough protein for your daily protein requirements is the best option.
However, as we are all different, it's best to experiment and see what suits you best.
Good luck
