Help - sugar rush!

So I'm one week into 5:2 and all has been going well. Fasting has been manageable and feed days are great! However, even before I started 5:2 I had made the decision to try and significantly reduce the amount of chocolate I was eating and until my feed day yesterday I hadn't had any sweets for just over a month. So on my feed day yesterday I decided to treat myself and have a little bit. I had 4 sweets from one of those tins of celebrations. Not long afterwards I felt really ill. I felt jittery, weird and then extremely nauseous. Finally I just felt horribly exhausted. Was this a sugar rush or something? I've never experienced anything like that before in my life and I used to eat a lot of chocolate/sweets. I have to say it has seriously put me off the idea of eating chocs again and I'm gutted about it. I love my sweets and would still like to enjoy them occasionally. Do you think it really was the chocolate? Has anyone else experienced this? Please help!

Yes, that's exactly what it was. You got a peak in blood sugar giving you the hyper and then your body released a loaf of insulin to control it and bring the blood sugar down but it overshot so you then got symptoms of low blood sugar. Because fasting improves insulin sensitivity and reduces insulin levels, especially immediately after a fast, your body was a little slow to the release the insulin and then your tissues absorbed the glucose more quickly than usual.

I've not experienced it but perhaps I was not so insulin resistant before...it's impossible to say. Probably your body is still adjusting and if you include sweets on your diet now and then it will be fine. Maybe start with one and see how you go!

Aha, that's what happened to me when I ate a quarter of a Costa peanut and caramel brownie. Prior to 5:2ing I suffered bad sugar dips/crashes and was astonished not to get them while fasting -EVER!. Very pleased. So when I got a serious crash after eating I was very confused about how it could have happened. Thanks to Marilynn for raising the question and to Caroline for , as ever, answering in straightforward terms.

Thank you, that must be it! It just shows how much sugar affects the body! As I said I have never experienced this before now even though I used to eat a lot of sweets. Scary to think what all that sugar was doing to me! Thanks for answering Caroline!
