Hi All,

I am from Downunder. Heard about BBC programme, bought book, read it and am trying it. I am a scientist.

So far biggest surprise is very very rapid weight loss after one fast, day one.
Second surprise is day two I had ketones. Now having done atkins many times I normally take 3 days to make ketones. So the fast (despite bread)on fast day has accelerated the process. I am 170 cm,female,50,was 69 kilos, now just under 67. I am assuming much of this is water weight. It will be interesting to see how this diet stacks up against atkins.

I keep a log of everything,so it will be good to see how the over all stats compare with other diets, but more specifically atkins.

Anything that can help people loose weight and improve health on a long term basis is worth trying.
Yes that is surprising but if you are used to Atkins, your body will be used to switching to fat burning. If you have been on a low carb diet your glycogen stores may be low too.

Welcome by the way, good to have more scientists here. Do join us in the nerdy stuff section for some lively debate!
No I have not been doing Atkins for quite some time(4 months). Hence my surprise at the ketones. If anything I would say my body has become more resistant to producing ketones on Atkins over the years. Not having ever fasted before,it may just be that diet, fast and exercise hastened the production. I have carb loaded today to see if when I next fast I still produce ketones. I will certainly be reading all the nerdy stuff!

Similar blood results occur in people on IF as Atkins. It would be fascinating to compare stats on both. I suspect they may be identical.
What I think is different about IF from other "diets" may be change. Our bodies are so great at coping with change that we have to do quite drastic things to prompt change. Our bodies adapt. Perhaps fasting is a method to trick our metabolism into releasing fat it would otherwise "hold on to".
Could well be...keep it guessing! My impression is that a big difference between feast and famine makes a difference but extending the fast (for an as yet undetermined time) or fasting too often does not help in weight loss. Whether it add to the yet to be proved "other benefits" we don't know.

As you will see in the nerds corner we are planning a survey to see if we can find any common factors between "responders" and "non-responders". Your thoughts on the study design are most welcome!
How can I tell I'm in ketosis. I've gone 41 hours on 400 cals but can't say I felt different apart from a bit of hunger.
If you want to know you need to buy some keto sticks from a chemist. You may not want to bother unless your curious.I just happened to have some having done Atkins on and off for years. Most people take 3 days to produce them, some never do. They are not expensive, diabetics use them often,so thats the section you will need in the pharmacy.
