I am new to this

Hi all. This is my first post here. I read all about the 5:2 Fast Diet on the internet and thought I would give it a go. I have tried various diets, lost weight, went on holiday and put it back on then lost the motivation. As I said I thought I would give it a go intending to fast on Tuesday and Thursday this week but when I woke yesterday I thought ‘GO FOR IT’ and decided to start there and then. I will also be fasting on the Tuesday and Thursday this week as a kick start. All went well, drank water and tea with no milk. I used to drink black tea years ago so I knew what to expect. This morning went back to tea with milk, had one cup and then decided why not carry on without the milk, it’s not that bad. Got a bit peckish mid-morning but had some fruit leaving most of my calories for dinner. As the night wore on the feeling of hunger had subsided and I thought this is OK, I can manage this fasting for 2 days a week knowing that I could go back to no restrictions the next day. That is why I failed on diets, the food restrictions and calorie counting. I hope this works for me as I have my daughter’s wedding in April 2014 and would like to be 2 stone lighter, also going to Ibiza in 3 weeks. I know if I keep this up there will not be a drastic weight loss by then but even if only a few pounds it would give me the motivation to carry on.

Hi & welcome! Well done on starting - I know how you feel, wanting to get going with it right away :) I was the same, but unfortunately didn't plan my first fast so well ;) Seems such a long time ago now!

Many of us have struggling to keep at other diets in the long term, 5:2 really does seem to be the answer. I've been doing this 7 months now and still love it :) I'm sure you'll be able to shift that weight in plenty of time for your daughter's wedding and hopefully a good few lbs before your holiday!

I am also new here and anxious to try this diet. I do have some questions about being anemic and if this diet is good on the two days of fasting. What could I possibly eat on those days? Thanks looking forward to trying this diet and joining in on some of the posts here. I am living in the state of Michigan in America.

Welcome caroldee!

If you have a medical condition, it's always a good idea to discuss it with your doctor. I don't know much about anemia, so I'm afraid my advice isn't worth much.

How quickly does iron deplete itself from the bloodstream? Is there a reason you can't eat iron-rich foods for your 500 calories and/or take an iron supplement with your meal on your fast days? Perhaps a lovely spinach salad with a small steak on it?

But it's good to see another American here! :-)

Hi there caroldee and welcome

What Tracie said!

You can have a heck of a lot of vegetables for 500 cals so on a fast day I usually have just one meal of a small amount of chicken or fish with a huge plate of veg. So I feel that my fast days are probably the most healthy days of the week!
