I've decided this is something I can don. I've not tried other diets because I knew they'd be unsustainable.

There's a new baby on the way in May (she's a bit of a surprise and a miracle as the fertility specialist said there was a 0% chance we would fall pregnant naturally - I guess he was wrong) and I need/ want to be healthy and involved in her childhood as I was with her two older sisters (aged 5 and 8).

Can someone clarify if the Fast Diet is exactly the same as the 5:2 diet? Does the Fast diet recommend fasting one meal (and consuming less than 600 cals) while the 5:2 diet recommends having a low calorie day during the fast days without necessarily fasting/ skipping lunch.

Anyway, I just started today and I'm starting to feel hungry - it's 4pm and I'm looking forward to dinner - probably have some meat/fish and vegies without carbs.

Anyone know how many calories for a 200g steak (without sauce)?
Hi Joseph_p,

The Fast Diet is a way of eating where you have reduced calories for 2 days and eat normally for 5. Your fast day limit is 600 calories which you can spread out how you like. Dr Mosley preferred to eat breakfast and dinner, which is what my husband and I have successfully done for the last 8 weeks.

I understand your enthusiasm, but I suggest you get the book and read it and also look at the FAQs on this site, before your next fast day.

You can use an app / online service MyFitnessPal to calculate calories. A 200g steak, lean meat only, would be 232 calories, according to the table in the back of The Fast Diet book. Enjoy your meal!

p.s. when hunger strikes, drink a cup of herbal tea, and do drink plenty of water.
Hi Joseph and welcome

5:2 and the fast diet are exactly the same. Dr Mosley introduced the 5:2 diet to the UK in his Horizon programme in August last year. Then in January he published the book which he called the Fast Diet.

Fasting is recommended for at least 12 hours at a time (so skip lunch basically) and also have reduced calories when you do eat so that you have less than 600 cals on your fast days.

The FAQ explains it all!
Thanks all for the replies. Carorees thanks for pointing out the 12hour fast concept. Although that said, it seems like I'm fasting everyday between dinner and breakfast :)

Day one done! The family had Creamy Ravioli pasta for dinner while I was good and had eggs, chicken and salad. Well the journey of a 1000 miles (or in my case 10+ kg) has begun with a single step.

Is it better if my next fast day is Wednesday or Thursday if Monday is my first fast day of the week? Is it better to try and space out fast days? Or does it not make a difference as long as the two fast days are not consecutive days?

Thanks again for the moral support.
I don't think it matters how you space your fast days, some people do them consecutively and can cope (I couldn't). Good luck with the diet and the baby - an exciting time!
I got the impression that this isn't something that should be done whilst you're pregnant? Don't mean to be a killjoy and I could be wrong but think it's worth checking.

It's OK, I don't think Joseph is the one having the baby
Good morning, you can have your fast days whenever you want. Dr. Mosely suggests splitting them because some people find consecutive days too difficult. I fast on Mondays and Tuesdays because it suits me best and gets the two days out of the way.
Good luck.

D'Oh!
Just finished second fast/ repair day and completed week one successfully. Got on the scales this morning and was pleasantly surprised to see a 1.1kg (about 2.3lbs) loss. That said, the weigh in happened on the morning after a fast day, so I think the real weight loss will be best measured on the morning of the first fast day of next week (Monday morning for me - which will take into account the weekend consumption. I'm also well aware that the first week/ first few weeks are where big weekly gains are most observed.

Nonetheless, it was good for me to prove to myself that this initiative is actually do-able and I was able to even go swimming with the kids after school.

I like the Progress Tracker too which gives me the opportunity to track and measure progress by weight, fat% and waist size (the second two measure are the true measure of success). I remember a saying in business - "What gets measured gets managed".
Jumped on the scales after the weekend of regular consumption (not partcularly good, not particularly bad) and was happy to see a 0.8kg (about 1.75lbs) from a week ago when I started the 5:2 diet. This week Monday and Wednesday will be my repair days coz there's some yummy food planned on Thursday when meeting up with friends. Feeling hungry/ thirsty now after a microwaved egg for breakfast - so I'm gonna go drink some water... lots of water. Haven't planned dinner yet, but looking forward to it.
Well done you, it is best to weigh the same day/time every week, jumping on and off through the week there will be fluctuations.
