Fast day calorie confusion
12 Mar 2013, 18:55
Apologies if this is asked and answered elsewhere, I have looked! Can't see an answer but it may well be there!

I have read conflicting advice. As a formerly morbidly obese, now overweight person, I still have weight to lose and so follow, basically, a 1200 a day diet. On my fasting days, should I be eating 1/4 of that, i.e. 300 calories or 1/4 of the "normal" intake for women of 500 calories?

Basically, you need to work out your calories over a week. So you need more than 1200 on feed days and approx. 500 on fast days.

Otherwise, you'll average out to less than a 1000 cals a day, which isn't enough sustain you properly.

If you are aiming for 1200 on average, you should eat around 1500 cals on feed days. (Have a look at the FAQ for calorie calculators for you to work it out correctly for you).

But that's sort of missing the point of the diet (subject of much discussion) in that you should eat normally on feed days (ie not gorge but normally) and then fast on two...mentally much easier.

Don't mix diets up as this one "seems" to work better if you eat more on feed days, again subject to discussion so read past posts and draw your own conclusions about what is right for you.

You should eat the right amount to maintain your current weight on feed days and up to 500 cal or a quarter of the feed day figure on fast days. As you lose weight you will have to reduce your feed day quantities but the way the diet works means that should happen without trying really!

Hello,
There's a link under 'Topics' in Resources to a TDEE (total daily calorie expenditure - I think?)calculator that will tell tou how many calories to eat on a Feed day, on a fast day you eat a quarter of that figure.

Unless you are tiny and very sedentary 1200 cals is way too little. You'd be doing two diets at once and that's not healthy.
This diet seems to work best with the see-saw effect of eating normally on feed days and cutting back dramatically on Fast days.
Hope that makes sense and is of some help.

There you go, 3 replies saying more or less the same thing, I can never remember the TDEE letters in the right order!

Good luck with it!
