Hi, I'm a newbie!
18 Mar 2013, 17:07
Hi all

I'm in my second week of 5:2 fasting and it seems to be going OK so far. My initial goal is to lose 28lbs although I'd be happy to lose more (but one thing at a time!).

My story is that I've never been thin (not even as a kid) but since having children I've found it easier to be lazy and harder to be strict with myself. I've tried diets before and did well on WeightWatchers but unfortunately once I stopped the weight all came back on again. The thing that appeals to me about this programme is that it completely strips you of guilt. No more ticking myself off if I go for a coffee with a friend and have a sticky bun!

My mum has been doing the 5:2 diet for around a month and has lost 6lbs so I thought I'd give it a go. Last week I had breakfast and lunch and coped OK although I dipped at around 3-4pm both days. Today I was very busy in the morning so decided to power through and not eat until dinner and so far I feel great. I'm surprised at how much energy I have considering I've only had tea and water all day.

Anyway, that's my story (so far), I'm looking forward to getting tips and help here.

Sarah

Hello Sarah and welcome. I've been doing this for over 6 months and personally I have always found it easiest not to eat until evening. When I eat I get hungry again - I think it is the insulin spike and crash.

You're right about the 'no guilt' - we can eat normally on the other 5 days. Only a teensy word of warning though, the 'normally' does mean that and not 'pig out'. Treats are fine but try not to get too carried away especially on the post-fast day - that's always my danger time!

Most important thing is to make it work for you - this one is for life (maybe as 6:1 when you get to your target weight). Sounds like you are off to a great start, well done!

Thanks Dominic. Unfortunately the day of my first fast last week was my 7yo's birthday so there was cake around the day after. Although interestingly I went to the bakers with my son yesterday and treated us both to a cake. When I ate it later I only wanted half of it. I'd had plenty and was happy to stop there, something that wouldn't have happened before. I've also started listening to my body on non-fast days and stopping when I'm full.

I considered trying a hardcore carb-free diet before I settled on the 5:2 and the reason I dismissed the carb-free one was because I just couldn't see it working long term. I see no reason why this WOE can't be a long term thing for me.

Hi All,

I´m a newbie too :)

I've been doing the 5:2 for one month now but feel as if I may have been overdoing it on the feast days so haven't seen much of a result as yet. I´m just back from a weekend of excess for my first wedding anniversary, but am back in the game as of tomorrow with the intention of not stuffing my face with chocolate on the feast days. Lets see how it goes...

Welcome noddy and MazzaBCN.
I've been doing 5:2 for 10 weeks, and can't imagine life without fasting already. It really helps train your appetite, and makes you aware of what you put in your mouth! I've been using myfitnesspal app to help track feast and fast days, but I don't weigh anything except on fast days now. Once you know what a normal portion looks like it's so much easier to be sensible.
Good luck to you both :-)

Hi all,

Just started my first fast day today and so far so good although im very tempted to finish off the day with a 45 cal soup!! After giving up smoking I have gradually put on around 12 kilos.

I have previously been a huge fan of the atkin's where I have had previous success but wasnt keen on consuming such a high fat diet which played havoc with my skin! I have just spent about 6 weeks on the dukan diet which I preferred and managed to lose 4 kilos.

I have since put two kilos back on after a weekend away, this is the reason i'm trying this diet as what I really dislike about the other diets is how unforgiving they are.

I have another 10 kilos to lose to get within range and back to where I felt my best. Will be great to hear from newbies and seasoned fasters. Today has been easier than I thought although im counting down the last hour before bed.

Will look forward to the journey
Xxx

Hi
This is my first day trying 5:2, & so far so good! Today was much easier than I expected, yes, I did feel hungry a couple of times, but coped fine. I think it's because I know I can eat normally tomorrow.
I went for a brisk walk for 50 minutes this morning, ate breakfast at 11 & dinner at 9.30 ( I work 1-9 pm on Mon & Weds) I thought I might struggle to keep going, but am fine!

I'm really hopeful that I will be able to take off the 10lbs I have gained recently, lose some body fat, & minimise those pesky menopausal symptoms!!

Can you pm Moogie about it if you're still having problems?

Hey there fellow newbies! What I've loved about 5:2 so far is that there's so little planning and obsessing involved. I have a family to cook for so I already meal plan for the week anyway, so now it's just a case of checking which days fasting would suit better and planning the meals accordingly. I'm certainly not obsessed about food like I've found myself on previous diets (even WW, which was my most successful to date).

Looking forward to my 2 nd fast day tomorrow, can't believe I had fish and chips last night guilt free which was very weird!!! Have planned my day meticulously with fat free yoghurt to start, an apple, low cal soups, plate of vegetables with garlic and chilli flakes for dinner. Looking forward to it all kicking in and the weekend!!
