50 pounds in 6 months?
26 Mar 2013, 14:38
Is it unrealistic to think I could 50 pounds in six months on this diet? I will be going on vacation at the end of October and really want to be proud to be in the pictures that will be taken.
My first fast day was yesterday and went really well, so well I don't really want to eat a lot today.

Yes, probably. It'll all depend on what you do but rapid continuous weightloss doesn't really fit with this woe. Better for your skin too not to deflate too quickly.

I'm expecting to lose a similar amount but by Christmas.

Have a play with the tracker and see what is average for your demographic.

Mind you, 30 lbs off would be very achievable and that would make a major difference to pics, plus do some toning and fitness and you should be well happy, even if not at your end goal.

14lbs off has made a major difference to me, despite having another 30 to go.

Probably it is unrealistic because the average weightloss is 1 lb per week so theoretically it would take a year. However some people are losing much faster and others much slower so I would say the time taken to lose 50 lb could range from 6 months to 2 years. I have been lucky and will probably manage to achieve that kind of loss but others are resigned to a long haul. It is too soon to tell. See where you are in about 6 weeks then you'll have a better idea of what your 5:2 journey will be like.

I wish I knew! PhilT has been helping me to try to work it out. It seems I have a very high TDEE for unknown reasons and yet this cannot have been the case before I started 5:2 because otherwise I would not have been putting on weight year on year. I've not changed my eating much apart from the two days fasting. I do think my appetite has decreased a bit from before but not all that much.

I am hoping the questionnaire I have created and hope to circulate to members who have shown particularly fast or slow rates of loss might throw some light on the issue.

I've been on 5:2 for around 6 months and have lost 16 kg which Google tells me is just over 35 pounds. I'm a tall guy with a high TDEE compared to most here, so I suppose you'd expect me to lose more weight than most. Given that, I'd agree that 50 pounds in 6 months is probably a little optimistic...

Me thinks impatientsue will need to be more patient - you'll still have lost a fair bit of weight though and be looking good  Goodluck - hope it goes well for you :clover:

Thanks Everyone! I would be happy with a 30 pound weight loss, although being impatient has always been the reason for giving up on diets before. This forum has already helped a lot. If it's just me and a diet book, the doubt that it's worth it starts settling in. It helps to stop in and get encouragement ♥

Put it this way to yourself if you need motivation, give up and you'll probably need to lose 80 lbs in a year or two. That was happening to me...
