Planning to start

I am planning to start the fast diet on Monday having been on travel for more than a month. I do have a question regarding the entire 5:2 diet concept. Is wine or other alcohol taken with a meal permitted? I have read nothing about this subject. Thanks for any info.

I'm new to this too - just did my second fast day yesterday, started on Monday.

As far as I can figure from the book etc, alcohol isn't forbidden, just not too much because calorie wise you can really blow things.

On fast days tho you'd be hard pressed to squeeze in much alcohol into 500 cals for the day....

I take the fast days to be 2 alcohol free days and then relax on the feed days.

A xx

Hi Zabelle

Do you mean on fast days? It's not specifically forbidden but certainly not recommended because a small glass of wine will take 100 cals out of your 500 allowance! And it will interfere with fat loss as alcohol acts rather like eating sugar.

If you're talking about on feast days, then alcohol is definitely permitted!!

I am new to this as well, I did my first fast day today and I found it wasn't that bad, in fact I feel quite energised, I'm normally asleep this time of night, ha, ha.

If you really must have a glass of wine with your dinner on a fast day, try a low calorie one. I don't drink alcohol on fast days, but if I really felt the need I could have half a glass (125ml) of Banrock Light (they do a lovely rose!) for 60cals :)

Hi everyone....I am also planning to start the fast diet on Monday... Been doing lots of reading and it all seems very positive... Just hoping I can do it. :-)

I really was asking about (for me) a glass of wine with my dinner. I have never been successful with those diets that forbid all alcohol. A sit down at the end of a long day with a nice meal and a glass of wine is one of my pleasures in life.

I can easily skip it on my fast days, just not forever. Thanks for all the comments.

Hi Zabelle, been on the 5:2 a couple of weeks now, I've had a few spritzers on my feast days , I wouldn't on the fast days, those 500 cals are precious and don't go far! ;) good luck when you start.

Hi Zabelle, I don't think most of us would manage the 5:2 lifestyle if it banned alcohol. It's best avoided on the fast/repair days (it's good to have some alcohol-free days anyway), but the idea of this diet is that you eat 'normally' on the other days, and I agree with you about the glass of wine!
