weight not coming off
04 Feb 2013, 13:26
Hi All, I'm new to the forum but have been fasting for the last 4 weeks. I have 2 - 3 stone to loose. The first week I lost 5lb, week2 put on 2lb, week3 lost 2lb and today put on 1lb, an overall weight loss of 4lb in 4 weeks. Any ideas why my weight loss is so poor. I am committed to 5:2 fasting because of the added health benefits but the low weight loss is disheartening.

Hi wildmissus and welcome to the forums.
Please don't be disheartened!

What other way of eating allows you to enjoy all the foods you like, most of the time - and yet still see those scales going down?!

1lb a week of loss is a healthy, sustainable amount - slow and steady wins the race!

Do you always weigh at the same time of day? Bear in mind other factors can contibute to the seeming weight gain. For example I find at 'that time of the month' I only ever maintain weight, I can't lose anything! Also remember that hormonal cycles will play a role in water retention which affects the number on those scales.

If you're exercising too you may be changing fat for muscle, which weighs more. Try measuring yourself as well as weighing, you'll often notice a loss in size even if the scales don't seem to show it!

If you'd been doing this a month and hadn't lost anything, that would be frustrating I know - but you've lost 4lb, that's great :)

Thank you for your support. I take on board your comments and I think I'll need to look at how much I'm packing in on feast days!!! As I have 2 young skinny teenage daughters who think they are chubby I have kept my fasting quiet and nobody has noticed (I only eat a tea time). Last Thursday, however, my OH was off and made me lunch, so I told him what I was doing. He is very sceptical about it but has decided to join me. It was his first fast day today and he is really hungry whereas I'm ok. Hopefully we will not only be losing the lbs but also saving £'s on the weekly shop!

Measure your waist as well as your weight. You will probably find your waist is shrinking despite the ups and downs in weight.

Don't despair too much. My weight has actually gone up by .8 kg but my body fat has dropped by 4.5% and waist reduced by 2cm. I figure the wight gain is probably retained water from eating too much bread during my non-fast days. I have just finished my 5th fast.

I'm finding not much weight loss in the last few weeks....weighed myself this morning after yesterday's fast day and it's the same as last week but have lost another inch from my waist, so something is happening.Anyone else having this kind of result, total weight loss 5lbs but 3.5 inches lost from waist?
Thinking about changing my fast day to just one meal in the evening to see if that helps. ;)

Oh please don't despair - 4lb in a month is really good. I had 5 stone to shed and was struggling until I discovered 5:2 on the Horizon programme last year. Since then I've lost further weight and am now halfway to my goal. Everyone says that slow weight loss is the best for your body - so hang on in there and keep going. Definitely take your waist measurement that'll show you progress too. Good luck - keep us posted on how it's going. :)
