Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to the diet, its my second week and tomorrow will be my 4th fast day. I think I'm over eating the night before i fast, not a massiv amount but just an extra bowl of cereal and banana for example. does anyone else do the same and am I just undoing the hard work from my fast days? Thanks AB
Are you genuinely hungry? or are you just nervous? I find personally that if I eat later the night before, I wake up hungry. If I don't eat after dinner, I don't tend to wake up hungry.

I would say if you're actually hungry (and we're learning what that is on this diet) then that's a reasonable snack (unless it's a sugary child's cereal). IF you're just nervous about fasting tomorrow, try to have a cup of herbal tea or a glass of water -- or maybe just a piece of fruit instead of both items.
I used to be like that when I started ( I had a few go last year). It's why now I count my calories on normal feeding days and don't go over 2000cal. It works for me, I'm learning to eat when I'm hungry and my tummy is happy with that :) Fruits or/and veg fills you up if you're hungry. Good luck!
I am a great fan of Marissa Peer who has written the book 'You Can Be Thin'.
Although some of her principles are quite extreme i.e. foods that are really bad and should be avoided. however, One of her principles is that we should not eat after 7pm at the latest as anything eaten cannot be digested fully before sleep and will sit fermenting in the stomach. Since being on 5:2 I have found it even easier not to eat in the evening - no snacks what so ever in fact. I dont even feel hungry when I wake up after a fast day. Marissa also has a free download with her book for hypnotherapy which for all of us who may be looking at portion control on eat days this could be a valuable aide.
Well I think the reasoning that Ms Peer gives for not eating after 7 pm is a load of baloney but the principle of not eating after 7 is sound because of the benefits of having long gaps between meals.
Not eating after 7pm is OK if you get home before 7pm. Some days I don't finish work until 8pm so don't eat until a lot nearer 9!
I think eating any time of the day is fine. Your body doesn't shut down when you go to sleep, in fact I actually thought your body did most of it's functions (like digesting food) when you were sleeping??

To OP, I think it will ease off. Like you I am new to this and find myself eating a little extra the day before and the day after a fast. I think it's totally in my head and not genuine hunger. I am hoping as time passes and my body gets used to this way of eating I will realise I don't need to do the overeating.
I don't normally eat after 7pm on fast or feed days unless for some reason there hasn't been the time, I just feel better the following morning if I haven't eaten too late.

Alibarber are you eating through hunger or just the thought of a fast day the day after?
Must admit I ate a bowel of oat cereal before my second fast. I think it was my head telling me I'd be hungry if I didn't. So thanks Alibarber for bringing this to my attention. BTW -LynnO- I love your avatar. Inspired me to do mine.
