I have just read this article that indicates Vitamin D stored in our fat may be slower to be released for use in overweight & obese people. Perhaps taking a daily vitamin tablet may be a good idea whilst losing weight? Also 2012 was such a dull year with a lack of sunshine that we may anyway be deficient in Vitamin D? I take a daily vitamin supplement anyway apart from on fast days because I am not sure about taking it on an empty stomach.

In Scotland, you don't get enough sunlight anyway so the incidence of MS is higher & I've been taking fish oils when I can remember as it also helps the skin.

Take it when you eat?

Since reading that thread I went out and bought some cod liver oil tablets with Vit D!
I live in the north as well and my GP tests my Vit D levels every year. They were very low at first, but I take 2000 iu daily and they're normal now.
As I understand it, the specific vitamin one needs to compensate for lack of sunshine is D3. I bought mine from a reputable source through Amazon as I couldn't find any locally at the time, and they're 2,400iu dosage at one per day. I doubt if I could prove it but I think they've kept the worst of my SAD at bay these last two winters, quite apart from all the usual advantages.
