I've successfully made a screen shot, but I cant manage to attach it to a post from my phone - maybe the wrong file type?

You can do that within Windows (all the way back to Windows 3.1) using a combination of the Ctrl-PrintScreen or Shift-PrintScreen keys. Then paste it into Windows' Paint application (or most any other app).

The former captures the entire window, the latter only the active application.
