I received a link to this article from a naturopathic doctor I have seen in the past. What do we think of this? Just another fad or gimic? Anyone heard of the chokeberry???????

A Berry that can Reduce Your Cellulite
A recent article in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that a particular berry that has demonstrated one of the highest ORAC values thus far, may be beneficial in reducing cellulite.

The researchers found “a marked reduction in the subcutaneous tissue thickness was observed in all subjects, with the average reduction and the length of subcutaneous tissue fascicles (ScTFL) was reduced in 97% of subjects”, when 100mls of the Chokeberry juice was consumed.

The black Chokeberry consists of significantly high amounts of phenolic flavonoid phyto-chemicals called anthocyanins. They are low in calories and fat while containing generous levels of minerals, and vitamins, and dietary fiber throughout their peel. Chokeberries also contain anti-oxidants such as carotenes, luteins and zeaxanthins. Zea-xanthin are very protective for eye health.

Several studies have shown that the juice has an extraordinary protective action on the liver and stomach as well as an anti-inflammatory action in rats. The black chokeberry juice also prevents bacterial growth as well and has been shown to have anti-mutagenic activity on cancer cells.

How can you go wrong with this powerful berry?

The berries do tend to be high in oxalic acid so individuals with gout, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney stones or certain forms of chronic vulvar pain are advised to avoid foods high in oxalic acid or oxalates. If you don’t find yourself in the above mentioned category, this may be the new super food of tomorrow. A great snack to incorporate into your antioxidant inventory of health foods and drinks. It will literally make you look and feel great!
The actual difference in skin thickness seen in the study was 1.9mm...is that enough to be noticeable I wonder? There was no control group so that means if the women were doing something else that might affect cellulite the study couldn't tell you.

This review of studies on the black chokeberry http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/20572194/?i=60 concludes that the studies are of poor quality and so it's benefits are yet to be determined. (As you might expect).
