The 5:2 fasting diet is a recipe for unhappiness

okaaayyy.....then it says:

Articles such as the Sunday Times's The Fasting Diet that advocate abstinence are essentially encouraging self-abuse

As if I need encouraging..... :D

(sorry) 8-)

I'd just like to point out that the "study" that the article mentions about sudden death is in fact a case report of a single patient. Such case reports are usually published because they are particularly unusual and are generally not applicable to the wider population. I would like to think that we all know that if we have any medical issues we should check with our GP before starting any kind of weight loss or exercise regime.

I also think that over eating is a form of self abuse which is far more prevalent than anorexia or cutting. It's just because it is so widespread that it is viewed as normal.

With the obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic anything that improves the health of the majority is important.

Hmmm, she's liking being anorexic to like being a smoker ... that rings alarm bells for me because as a smoker I know that there is nobody worse, more judgemental or blinkered than an ex smoker! It's no good telling someone not to smoke, you need to tell them HOW to not smoke.

Thats why this forum is invaluable because we are all helping each other with support and more ideas on what we can eat because we are not stopping eating .. we're just rejigging when we eat.

I've previously been referred to a weightloss specialist nurse through my GP and I was not impressed with the NHS approach at all. I know I need to 'eat less, move more' .. everyone does, but it doesnt work for everybody.

My 'specialist' was heavier than me and didnt know what a glycemic index was. They had no idea to how read the bloods I had done and didnt understand that medication I was on was giving false results...these were things I had to research myself.

I find it hard to eat three times a day and if I stuck to three balanced meals a day I would not be able to exercise because I'd spend half of the day asleep!

And as for 'sudden death' ... how many tablets that the GP's dish out for diabetes, high blood pressure etc have this listed as a side effect?

I'm pleased to see so many articles on this diet, it provides more info for ME, and if this diet suits ME then I WILL do it rather than follow some generic NHS guidelines which I think should be aimed at people live on processed food .. thats real self abuse :?

Quite a debate going on over there in the comments section!

I do wish that the book hadn't been called 'The Fast Diet' as it does cheapen the concept somewhat - but obviously they had to make it catchy like that to sell. I still don't think of myself as being 'on a diet'. It's a lifestyle and a naturual, healthy way of eating.

I for one am not going to waste my lovely healthy, longer life on arguing with disbelievers!

To be fair I'm sure I read that Dr Michael Mosley expressly stated that among the people who shouldn't do this weather are those with eating disorders. He should, though, perhaps answer this?

Hot on the heels of the above disparaging article comes another in today's Guardian by Hugh F-W lauding 5:2

Sadly followed up by a bit more misinformation that missed out the latest studies but hey at least it's positive!
