Concludes "Perhaps the diet Mosley ultimately adopts is not that radical, and perhaps it doesn’t even represent CR (the level at which CR is defined varies from 10-25% reduction in overall calorie intake in humans). Any attempt to encourage reduced calorie intake in a nation with such high rates of obesity as our own may be commendable, but critics will likely find little new in the advice Mosley dishes out: reduce your calorie intake, reduce your weight, reduce your cardiovascular risk factors. Perhaps that’s the message to hope people take forward from this."
I am working my way through Gary Taubes's "Why we get fat", and draw the conclusion that the medical profession in general are lagging far behind evidence regarding the causes and solution to excess weight and associated health deficits. They, and we, have been led down the wrong path regarding weight management, and instead of much griping about the various 'diets' being lauded and then demolished from year to year, such as you have highlighted in this BMJ article, we need a radical revamp of our food industry, full stop. The solution is already out there, but it seems a monumental task re-educating all concerned.
That was published over 6 months ago...it would be interesting to know what their take on it is now! From reading forum posts we can see some doctors have embraced it...doing it themselves and/or advising their patients to try it, others are still unenlightened being cautious.
