I just ran into an article in Nature (August 2012) which says that a study with rhesus monkeys showed that calorie restriction doesn't lead to a longer live. Curious about the opinion of the experts here about this study!

Here is a good review of the two studies in monkeys...one showed an increase in longevity, the other did not. There were important differences between the studies. one being that the monkeys whose lifespan was not increased were eating a healthier diet in the first place!

I think that it's still too soon to tell. For me I'd rather improve my health than worry about living to 125 in poor health!
I know that I'm healthier than I was a couple of years ago - being 4 stone lighter now than I was then that's gotta be the case, right?!!! So I'm with you Caroline (as ever!) - improve my health now, if I live longer (in good health) than that's an added bonus !!
I'm all for a better quality of life rather than trying to reach achieve more years on this planet. Having cheated death three times in the past 12 years, I know that I can pop off at any time due to my breathing problems, so I'm doing all I can to make sure that when I have my next allergic reaction my body is as fighting fit as possible because medication can only do so much.
Obesity leads to all sorts of symptoms of ill health. Everyone who goes from obese to good weight report better sleep, easier walking, and just general well being. Longevity is only part of it. Gut feel says restriction on calories in this age of rich food and too much sugar for our good must be better in the long run.

sometimes im saddened to think that even though intermittent fasting is getting more popular, the great majority of the Western world that are battling weight just dont know about it as an option
