Browsing through some recently published science studies, I came across this little gem:

A substance extracted from spinach can help reduce the hunger pangs you get after eating, especially after a high carb meal!

Spinach sandwich anyone?
Maybe Popeye had the right idea after all! :?:
I subscribe to the view that greens do something powerful. I didn't know it was thylakoids, I always assumed it was chlorophyll, so I enjoyed reading it. I gather that if it is green, it has thylakoids in it which is just as well as I eat masses of kale, broccoli, cabbage, chard, home made kale crips, nori sheets etc. Most days I will eat something green. I suppose volumetrics has something to do with it too, but even if I can't get my green fix, I have a teaspoon of liquid chlorophyll in some water.

Adding spinach to a fruit & veggie smoothie (which I don't have very often), is a great way to fill you up and keep you satisfied as a fruit smoothie on its own normally makes me hungry half an hour later eg orange juice with blended spinach. I have been known once in a while to have a green juice fast day which really does blunt the appetite.

I have read that it is better to eat spinach, chard and kale lightly steamed rather than raw as the oxalic acid can interfere with the calcium absorption available from the veggie. Important for me because I get my calcium mostly from green veg. I don't know if this is right @carorees, so if you find any articles on it, I would be really interested.

Mmmm spinach. It's probably the healthiest food I love the most.

P. s. Starbucks in Japan used to do a lovely spinach and egg sandwich.
Your granny was right then!
That would help explain why the very spinachy pasta meal I make fills me right up and doesn't leave me hungry again like other pasta meals. I must try a fast day version of this :)
I'm a lover of all greens! Kale, chard, arugula, broccoli and more!!! Every day. :like: :like:

Thanks @carorees

Fascinating stuff . And @rawkaren I just had to chuckle at your chlorophyll in water comment as I extract chlorophyll from spinach to give to our sixth formers. Lol
