Intermittent fasting: a dietary intervention for the prevention of (type 2) diabetes and cardiovascular disease?

A study by James E Brown, Michael Mosley and Sarah Aldred, in The British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease.

This seems to me to be an excellent study of the effects of IF, with positive conclusions:

Intermittent fasting promotes weight loss in obese individuals
Limiting calories in this way can reverse diabetes
IF is potentially cardioprotective.
Excellent article B&W - and it quotess 66 references to draw its conclusions. If only I had time to read them all.

This is the classic summary paragraphs in the introduction which will ensure when I reach my goal weight (I have 4kg to go) i will not stop IFing.

Extensive evidence suggests that imposing fasting periods upon experimental laboratory animals increases longevity, improves health and reduces disease, including such diverse morbidities as cancer, neurological disorders and disorders of circadian rhythm.

The specific benefit of intermittent fasting as a health giving therapeutic approach has been recognised since the 1940’s.
Just a note to say this paper was published in April and we very briefly discussed it here: post40047.html

So it's good to revisit it for more discussion!
