ADF - longer-term?
24 Feb 2013, 21:17
This is a post because of a couple of posts about ADF, particularly the one about ketones affecting rats badly over the longer-term?

What's the science here?

I'm finding ADF pretty ok so this is of interest to me. :)

Study on rats on ADF showed accumulation of fatty acids in the heart wall and stiffening resulting in a form of heart failure. Of course rats fasting completely every other day is not exactly what you are doing but I think we should be cautious. There have also been studies showing heart problems with low carbing and also when IGF1 levels get very low. I think 5:2 is likely to be ok, but I would hesitate to suggest long term ADF.

We really need more studies on long term intermittent fasting before we can really make an informed choice so caution is required.

Ok. So caution required. I'm fairly relaxed about time & results so do take it fairly easily.

Thanks.

Humans don't show the same effects on calorie restriction as rodents, which is how the whole fasting thing came about.

What did the rats eat ?

Link to low carb / heart link ??

ADF results in "a decrease in plasma triglyceride concentration (men)" ?

Rat study...rats ate standard lab rat chow.

Low carb link to heart disease:

I agree that we can't assume that the studies in rats can be extrapolated to humans but I just wanted to point out that it is best to be aware of these studies so that we can decide for ourselves whether or not to follow ADF or low carb or whatever.

Low carb diets "may be detrimental to the health of people who have ischemic cardiovascular disease or a predisposition to heart attacks" from link.
