Reduced TDEE after weight loss
08 Mar 2013, 11:21
Measured reductions in TDEE and TDEE/kg FFM after weight loss are more due to reductions in non-resting expenditure through increased efficiency of work according to http://ajpregu.physiology.org/content/285/1/R183.long

So not so much a reduced metabolism, as a more efficient organism.

The effects were then largely reversed by injecting Leptin in http://www.jci.org/articles/view/25977

Differences in TDEE could approach 3 twix level
Thanks for that Phil!

Interesting that leptin can affect the energy required for exercise! What does this mean for us in practical terms once we have lost some weight? When calculating our TDEE should we input a lower exercise level than what we think we are doing to take account of this effect?
The extra muscular efficiency seems to only apply at very low power levels, so for anyone performing proper exercise (or HIT) there should be no need to correct TDEE for the exercise component. My two penn'orth ...

However Table 1 clearly shows reductions in TDEE from a combination of REE and NREE reductions.

They look at muscular efficiency etc in exercise to understand the NREE reduction in normal living. Most of our NREE is low intensity movement, walking etc.

As you say the efficiency of intensive exercise may be the same, but extra activity post weight loss may be required to maintain weight if appetite can't be regulated.
