Podcast re leptin

If you don't mind a bit of rubbish audio and an occasionally irritating Jimmy Moore...

http://www.askthelowcarbexperts.com/201 ... -rosedale/

Doesn't seem to agree with much of the "leptin reset protocol" concept.

You can read more by the good Dr at http://drrosedale.com/blog/2012/08/18/a ... -questions - he's not a fan of starches or eating too much protein.

Wow, what a ton of valuable information. How on earth do I achieve all that? Hmmm. No sugar or starch means a bleak Easter ...

I had leptin issues for years, I never felt full. But fortunately managed to avoid huge weight gain. I just always felt hungry. I did a short programme last year with a chap called Paul Mort and he put us on huge quantities of fish oils... food was very clean no dairy no sugar minimal carbs, quinoa/sweet potato/ low sugar carbs... tons of water..
I FELT FULL.... it was the high fish oils.... I have never avoided fat but realised that fat certainly stopped me binge eating or feeling hungry for the first time in years. I lost a bit of weight but not so much as I was not doing the exercise protocols... I was sent some utube footage but cannot recall the doctor's name. Superb stuff on leptin research but yes no sugar, no fruit...

A lot of detail from Dr Rosedale about his recommended diet is at http://drrosedale.com/healthplan.htm. As Phil has said, it is lowish protein, very low carb (not just the usual villains, this guy has it in for pretty much all carbs) and high fat.

These are his preferred fats:
Rosedale Health Plan wrote:
  • Oils ― Cod Liver Oil, Flax oil, fish oil. Do not heat these oils.
  • If you must cook with oil, use olive, or even better, coconut oil or ghee.
  • Avocados ― excellent source
  • Olives ― green or black and olive oil
  • Nuts ― macadamia, almonds, pecans, walnuts, Brazil nuts, etc. NO PEANUTS
  • Remember, fish, eggs and meats all contain fat.
  • Ghee, butter

He likes green vegetables but no starchy veg. He doesn't like fruit, and wags a finger at tomatoes! For liquids stick to caffeine-free tea and coffee-substitutes. If you must have a real coffee once a day, ok. Rather than alcohol, do yoga.

Jeesh! I am quite impressed by the logic but I am not ready for this. I don't think I will ever be...

I haven't had a chance to listen to all of the podcast yet, so apologies if what follows was covered.

First, have you seen this about the theoretical basis for the leptin reset protocol?
http://www.jackkruse.com/how-does-the-leptin-rx-work/

Two things that caught my attention were the carb link with daylength and vitamin D and use of cold to stimulate thyroid function, which is discussed more here: http://www.jackkruse.com/rewiring-the-leptin-rx-reset/

The leptin reset is based on going low carb and it is interesting that fasting appears to do a lot of things that the leptin reset protocol does. The FAQ on jackkruse.com says "If you’re LR, you are a sugar burner, not a fat burner." And we know that fasting results in fat burning so I wonder if those who are not particularly leptin resistant respond well to fasting but for others who struggle with fast days and weight loss, perhaps the two fast days are not enough to force them into being a fat burner?

Any thoughts on the need to avoid aerobic exercise when 'leptin resistant'?

Kruse talks of muscles being unable to use the fuel sent to them so it is shuffled off to storage and the muscles continue to scream "eat more" so we do - allegedly. http://www.jackkruse.com/why-is-oprah-s ... in-part-3/
