Fitbit - NEAT
10 Jun 2013, 19:37
Anyone tried a Fitbit gadget to track their activity levels ? I got one off Ebay to have a play with.

Might be interesting if someone used one before, during and after calorie restriction or 5:2 to look for trends in NEAT levels.

I have just synched my FitBit Zip for the day, I've been wearing one every day since not long after I started 5:2. It links to MyFitnessPal where I log my foods. I haven't done the sort of comparisons you mention

I want to get one of the wrist band ones, which aren't available in Australia yet. I've had a pedometer before, and it really made a difference to my activity level, but I lost it and its replacement. So a wristband will hopefully help with not losing it.

I have a Fitbit One. I love it. I'm not familiar with NEAT...is it like HIIT? My goal is to just get over 10,000 each day and I haven't missed a day in over a month.

Ok, it was a long thread...but I guess NEAT is just moving more when you're not exercising. So, fidgeting, walking, standing more as you go about your normal day? The Fitbit has definitely helped me with getting more movement I do things like put away the laundry one item at a time. LOL, just trying to take more steps. ;)

I LOVE my FitBit One. We are inseparable. When I started I logged about 3-5,000 steps a day. It really made me cognizant of how inactive I was. I now hit 10,000 steps most days, striving for 12,500 now plus at least one 15,000 step day on the weekend. While I had it shortly before I started 5:2, I kicked in both in seriously in April. Did I mention how much I love mine:) Several members of my family have one and you can form groups so you motivate each other. I have a family group, work group, and friend group. Takes no effort to log, it us all done thru bluetooth on your computer, iphone or ipad. I just checked my steps and I lack 27 from hitting 15,000 today, so I will have to make a circle within my house. I park far away, I circle in stores, march while in the elevator, anything to stay active. I could take some screen shots of my dashboard and post them if anyone is interested. Can't say enough good things. You can order them from Amazon or Brookstone has them in stock.

NEAT is "Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis" - the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise.

GoLinda, thanks for posting such an enthusiastic post. I LOVE mine too I wear it clipped to my bra, and one day it made it through the washing machine still attached to my sports bra, and survived. We had a trip to Madrid recently and in one culture filled day walked 23,000 steps, which made me feel better about all the delicious Tapas.

It does cycling too! I use my bike for transport, so that would be so handy. But I really want the fit on wrist thing, and prefer the look of the fitbit flexi. Oh decisions decisions.
