Let's talk about cheese
03 Feb 2015, 02:15
Yesterday, a fast day and I had this obsession with cheese. Had a reasonable amount of mozarella (the Aussie, hard kind compared to the soft Italian kind) and find its 230 or 250 calories per 100g hmmm. also had Halhoumi on a potato frittata.. I best watch it tomorrow my next fast day.

When you eat for cheese sake, not as part of a cooked meal, what cheese do you like and is there one we should lean towards for a quick protein, low cal fix other than cottage cheese.

Do you have a favourite brand/variety of cheese?

I love most cheese. I don't eat anything other than cottage cheese or mozzarella on fast days, but then it's hard to get good cheese in Okinawa. My favorites are chèvre, Wensleydale, cheddar, Gruyere… too many to name. If I'm going to have just cheese, it would be cheddar, red Leicester, or gouda. something like that…

ok. it's a fast day. I need to stop thinking about cheese.

Mmmm. Cheese.

Roquefort is my favourite but I like most cheese, apart from cottage cheese actually.

Another one here firmly in the pro cheese camp.
I love it all, though not too partial to the cottage variety. Also, I don't like it adulterated with other things... stilton and apricots for example.

Mmmm cheese. (said in Homer Simpson voice)

Anything full fat that is not blue or with added sweet things. Loseley Farm cream cheese; double Gloucester and chives; red Leicester. Mascarpone. Special treat strictly on birthday and Christmas only - gjetost, a whey cheese which is sweet and brown, looks like fudge.

Loathe cottage cheese, ricotta and such like.

I had a cheese craving on a fast day yesterday too. My choice is domestic Swiss. I gave in and had a couple ounce piece. Still lost some weight, so no harm done. I love most cheese, not a big goat cheese fan although I've been told I've never had good goat cheese or else I would love it. Not sure about that.....a bit too pungent for me. Can't seem to get it past my nose! OY! :dazed:

One of my go-to snacks on a fasting day is cheddar. I've discovered Chedds, little bags of chopped up Cathedral City cheddar aimed at kids' lunchboxes which are 67 calories each. And unlike a 67 calorie carb snack they do fill me up a little.

And feel like a treat!

I love cheese! You can't beat a mature cheddar or nice stilton. I really don't like the ones with fruit added either. I rarely buy cottage cheese but it does have it's charms, I might get some today actually to help me through this fast day. Funnily enough I get a bit hooked reading recipes/watching food programmes on a fast day and I've just been looking at Jamie Oliver's baked camembert *drools*

I like most cheese, apart from cottage cheese, and it is one of the very few foods that I weigh - simply because it is so calorie dense and it helps me 'put the brakes on' my consumption of it!

My love for cheese is what got me through 7+ years of eating a very strict low carb diet.

I love many of those runny, smelly French cheeses , but they have become ruinously expensive here in the U.S. and I can't justify buying $18/lb cheese, especially since they are sometimes in poor shape since local stores dont' know how to take care of delicate cheeses. So that kind of cheese is a rare indulgence. I envy all of you who routinely get to go to France!

I usually buy whatever it the monthly "Spotlight Cheese" at Trader Joe's, which is often quite good. This past month it was a caramel washed aged Gouda. Before that a very nice artisanal aged Vermont-style cheddar (the extremely sharp kind with the little crystals in it.) But I buy all the other cheeses they have there. They have a creamy gorgonzola that is delightful, a workman-like store brand Brie, and quite a few other cheeses I rotate through.

The best cheese I had last year was a heart-shaped imported French neufchatel they had at TJ's last Valentine's day which was amazing and which I have never seen again anywhere. It bore no relationship to the cream cheese sold here under the same name.

For low calorie cheese I enjoy a Greek Yogurt cheese that looks like cream cheese but has a nice tang. It's made by a local company in Vermont and only found in one market here, Stop & Shop. Only 60 calories an ounce and very nice on morning toast.

My one very odd cheese habit is to drop little cut up slivers of cheese into hot soup. Swiss cheese works best as it holds its shape. Delightful in a beef barley soup.

Another cheese lover here but in strict moderation as I normally end up doubled up with stomach cramps so the cravings need to be strong. Probably because I like the strong smelly stuff the best. So I try to stick to goat and sheep which seems to be easier such as a crottin de chavignol. Like @peebles, I miss not being able to get decent cheese out here without them charging an extortionate amount. This curbs my intake!

I work on the deli counter in a supermarket which includes the cheese counter. You would think I would get fed up of it but not so. My favourites are strong cheddars like Tickler or Orkney, the smoked cheese Applewood, cheddar with balsamic onions and I adore feta.

I have to put out a warning to my fellow colleagues when I open Danish Blue as it absolutely pongs. I remember serving a man and his young son some ham and the wee boy asked his dad what the bad smell was. I had to admit it was me...having cut the danish blue but not yet wrapped it.

At Christmas we had some unusual concoctions - Wensyledale with sticky toffee, Wensyledale with fig.

I'm struggling to think of a cheese that I don't like! Cottage cheese is my least favourite - reminds me of doing Slimming World I think! I can eat it though - especially the flavoured ones. Dolcelatte is perhaps my favourite - at room temperature of course so it's lovely and stinky!
