What is NORMAL?
13 Feb 2013, 20:46
So I have been 5:2ing for 5 weeks and it has been a bit up and down. I am now 8lbs down in 5 weeks - well pleased.

BUT

I get the 2 days fasting - I eat up to 500 calories in one meal on a Monday and Thursday. OK, good.

Eat NORMAL for 5 days!!! What is NORMAL.

Eg.

Today
Breakfast
3 heaped tablespoons greek yogurt
quarter of a tin of fruit cocktail in juice
3 heaped tablespoons of Lizi's granola
green tea

just before lunch

a handful of Jazzies (the white chocolate drops with sprinkles on them)

Lunch
half carton Covent Garden Chicken Soup
quarter of Sainsbury's Giraffe bread with real butter
6 Digestive Biscuits
fennel tea

Tea
Burger King
Regular Chilli Cheese burger, chips & Vanilla Milk Shake

Home
fennel tea
Ripple
Packet of Jelly Tots

Grazed on a whole packet of Extra Strong Mints

Finished apart from drinking lots of water this evening.

Ok so I haven't had a Burger King in about a year and tea would normally be a Hairy Dieters meal or a stir fry.

This is how I 'normally eat'. Surely I can't continue to lose weight eating like this. Surely I'm going to have to ditch the biscuits/chocolates and maybe have them as a weekly treat.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Just input those things into the calorie counter at www.fatsecret.co.uk to get an idea of cals. Then follow one of the links to a TDEE calculator in the FAQ. Compare!

If I had eaten that lot I would definitely be over. I might get away with it without the sweets or the chips. So it depends on your height, weight and activity level!

Hi Wildmissus, on my non fast days I eat a lot of fat, bacon, eggs , butter etc.I do track what Ive eaten though and try not to exceed 2000 cals.Often I dont get that high. The reason I go for 2000 cals is because that is around my maintenance requirement. Also 2000 cals I beleive is mentioned in the book or if not you assume that as 500 cals is supposed to be 1/4 of your daily calories. So, I think we need to be thinking that we can eat whatever we want but not without limits. I know the book says we dont need to count calories but I too doubt that it would work if we ate loads more than we actually need.Maybe ditch the snacks. The rest might not be as bad as you think.

Hi Wildmissus
I suppose we need to think about how we put the weight on in the first place. If "normal" eating causes weight gain, then we need to adjust what we consider normal. Although many people don't count calories on feed days, perhaps keeping track for a while will enable you to find a new "normal", and possibly your weight loss will speed up? This WOL is pretty new, so there are bound to be little refinements we will have to make as we go along.

Remember that you're cutting out a day and a half's worth of "normal" calories per week. Unless there's a pressing reason to lose weight super-quick, then if you're losing weight, why stress over the feed days? I certainly don't.

Of course I recognise that we're all different so what works for me may not work for you, but personally what makes this so doable is that I don't worry overmuch about feed days and I still lose weight.

I eat well and so fell out with a doctor over my weight and ended up at a dietician. She agreed that my diet was fine but pointed out my portions were still that of a manual worker (grew up on a farm) and enough for a family of 4...so it's only now I'm getting a grip on portions. That was normal for me!

Now I count my calories because I go over 2000cal quite easily. http://www.fatsecret.co.uk says I should be 1900cal but when I add walking, standing up, even sitting! and housework I'm between 2100-2300cal. So I try to stick to 2000cal ish (if I only sleep and rest I think it's a bit under 1700cal so I keep that in mind if I would have a 24hours laying down). I eat both healthy and have a few treats. Exemple:

Breakfast : 3 toasts with spread/butter and jam/marmalade/or porridge with honey and a toast with spread and jam with a big white coffee

Lunch: Banana, salad, vinaigrette and couscous salad egg/or a bowl of soup with 1 slice of bread with spread/butter or Uncle Benz rice mushroom either half pack or whole pack with salad. Sandwiches or Bagel will more likely in Spring time. And a serving of nuts, seeds and fruits mix and a piece of dark choc

4pm: either a fruit/or a double Decker/or a toast with Nutella/ or a crumpet with honey. Maybe another fruit

Dinner: Normal dinner (I'm so happy to be back to normal cooking), any meals but I keep in mind to have about 1/3 carbs, 1/4 protein and the rest veg/salad. Then it depends how many calories I have left and if I feel hungry. Often I have a fruit and a serving nuts, seeds and fruits mix with my coffee.

Of course all day white coffee. My bread is often Wholemeal but time to time I have baguette or tiger bread.

I csn feel I'm "slimming" down but I wait April to weigh myself. I feel much better and my vestibular is weak.

Is this a normal feed day for you?
Just at a glance it must be well over 5,000 cals!
