When I woke up this morning, I thought of my scales. (Pathetic, I know...)
I wondered how much my weight would be since yesterday was a non-fast day and I had ice cream and a chocolate covered pretzel and pasta for lunch.
Then I thought "well, as long as I haven't gained, I'll be happy".

Before I even went on my scales, I thought that since I'm not starving, I should not expect much. Since I'm not expecting much, I am happy with losing a little or not gaining. Since I'm happy, I can go on forever. And since I can go on forever, I will definitely LOSE the weight I want to lose in more or less time!!!

So what's the difference with other diets? Well, I don't know about you but when I was hungry all day and all night, when I was absent from social events, when I missed good food I expected to lose A LOT! If the price is high, the reward should be a good one. I would pay the price but I wanted to lose 3 kilos in a week. That was fair to me. And when it didn't happen I got disappointed, I got unhappy, I would eat and then give up or give up and then eat.

I know that I want to lose a stone till Easter but even if I don't, I know that I will lose it eventually. And with this lifestyle, I won't gain it back. Even if I go on a holiday, I'll come back and do 4:3 for two weeks. It's so simple and so easy and so cheap!!! Have you noticed how expensive some diets are? They expect you to eat the most expensive meat and fish and veggies and still starve!!!

Conclusion: while I usually have great expectations and poor results, I feel that this time having minor expectations will lead to great results. Perhaps not fast results but speed doesn't matter. It's reaching your destination and staying there that counts.

P.S. They don't read these forums but I would like to thank my dear friends from York who told me about 5:2. I will be forever grateful to them and to all of you for the support!!!
I like the way you're thinking!
I absolutely agree TML.
With previous diets, you sacrifice so much, you just have to constantly see results on the scales to keep you going. This woe is so relaxed and easy and just makes me a much happier person all round. My OH definitely prefers me on this!!
Re the cost as well, I used to pay a monthly fee to belong to another diet forum, which was nowhere near as good as this one, which is free! We are so lucky to have Moogie doing so much work, plus the expertise and advice from Caroline and PhilT, plus many others.
I'm so relieved I found this woe plus this forum. Long term, surely we can't fail?

Yeah, I know! I'm very clever but I try not to show it because some people feel uncomfy around me.
I so agree! Never again will I buy any weight watchers products it is real food all the way for me!
agree with both OP and Evie re Moogie

this WOL is so much better than the prvious diets i have been on and if it wasnt for moogie we'd be struggling on in hte dark with little support

xx
Here Here! I love the relaxation of it all. I have been doing low carb for two years and in the 6 or 8 weeks I have been on 5:2 I have noticed a big difference in my food bills (even with the odd bar of choccy included now!)For a start off both big son and hubby do SW so I was buying low fat for them and high fat for me. Now I can eat what I fancy.

I'm sure the lessening of tension helps the weight loss. I have noticed this before when I've been on other plans. The harder you try on the very restricitive plans the more your body seems to cling to the fat. Just being more chilled about what you can or cannot eat seems to coax the fat cells to collapse!
Moogie, Caroline, Phil and all the "experts" are doing all the hard work and we enjoy the results of hard work. How cool is that???
TML, you actually just touched on something briefly that I'm only now starting to think about.

I am 59 and have been dieting since I was 13. I look back on my life and can't tell you how many wonderful events I missed, because they centered on food or dinner was being served...or whatever. I never thought about it before, but dieting really does make one antisocial.

Now I can accommodate my eating to fit my life, not the other way around.

I wish I'd known about 5:2 many, many years ago.

They do seem very happy though, don't they, with their graphs and charts and sciencey stuff?  I read some of their posts, nod knowingly, mutter to myself "yep, what he/she said", then go off and do the fun stuff, like sorting my avatar

I read some of their posts and wonder if they speak Chinese but use English characters just to mess with us, LOLOLOL!!!

I always preferred to not go to a dinner party than go and not eat. I know that it might sound weird to some but it's the was I do things.
Not to mention that instead of planning the holidays I was planning my diet for after the holidays.
Although I haven't been doing it for too long (until I was 30 I could eat whatever I wanted and never got fat and if I gained a kilo or two I lost it in a day or two) I hated it and I'm glad it stopped. I just hope that the 5:2 will work for me and with me so that I can get on with me life and never look back. If my thyroid decided to come back to normal as well, it will be a nice addition. :-)

"Speed does not matter, reaching your destination is what counts." You've hit the nail on the head. We didn't get fat over night. We are definitely not going to get skinny overnight either.

We're on a plan where basically, we can eat anything we want, within reason. What other eating plan can say that?

Right on, sista!

What they said!! I have been doing this for a couple of months now, I have't lost too much but neither have I gained. We are off on a three and a half month holiday at the end of April (yes, I know, tough life!), and for the first time I am not contemplating how I will lose the weight I put on whilst away as I wil be fasting at the same time. Not too hard, fast on travel days, skip brekky, don't obsess and walk lots!!
By now, normally I would be dieting as hard as I could in expectation that I would pile some it back on again, and the plan I was on before was telling me how to minimise my holiday eating, what sort of fun is that?!!

I sort of put on the weight overnight (4 kilos in less than 2 weeks) but before that I had gained another 2 kilos which I tried to lose for over 3-4 months. I know that I'm different since it's my thyroid that is doing all the damage but I am a stubborn cow when I want to and I'm going to fight this fight and win! I even want to lose 2 more kilos so that I can fit in a pair of jeans that fitted only once a year.
No other eating plan gave me the certainty that I can do it AND enjoy my life AND not gain it back in the future AND not spend tons of money while doing it AND meet all the wonderful people of this forum AND have a back up plan (4:3) if 5:2 doesn't work.
