Benefits & Side Effects

Tea, hot or cold / black or green makes me sick on fast days and I get nauseous when I drink unswetened tea on an empty stomach .. Hot green tea is my favourite drink on feed days .
Do you feel the same or it's only me?
Can anyone suggest any solution?
Hi Ninaa, I haven't been sick but have been a little queasy from time to time. I'm afraid I don't know how to do the tech bit to take you straight to a thread, but there were some good posts on vomiting on a fast day. If you search that in top left search box, you should find it. Good Luck
Ginger is very good for helping with nausea. Why don't you grate some fresh and let it sit in boiling water for a few minutes then drain it off. It is quite hot but very effective and you can adjust the amounts.
Hi Ninaa!

Glad to hear I'm not the only weird one! For about the last ten years, I haven't been able to drink tea (green/black/white) on an empty stomach. I've googled it previously and it sounds like it's common enough. Something to do with a bad reaction between stomach acid and tannins in tea.

Unfortunately the only way I can stop the nausea (I've actually vomited a couple of times, too) is to get something into my stomach quickly. Even if it is just a bite of something.

On fast days, I stick to herbal teas which don't have the same effect - I assume this is because there's little to no "tea" in them. My favourites are Peppermint/Lemon, Ginger and Mango and depending on the brand, sometimes chai (I can't do Twinings Chai, but the asda one is ok).

I hate herbal teas apart from redbush (rooibos) tea which tastes near enough to real tea as you can get but without tannins or caffeine. It's supposed to be good for the digestion too. All other herbal teas smell divine but taste like ancient dried leaves in boiled water to me!
Coffee used to make my morning sickness worse when I was pregnant, and if I have too much coffee normally it can make me a little bit nauseous. Decaf makes no difference either so I just stick to 2-3 cups a day max. Maybe fruit teas? I like hot water with lemon as a replacement for tea and coffee (not sure about calories though), more refreshing.

Thanks Umleils. Will try this on my next fasting day (saturday)
When I read your message before lunch, I'd not experienced nausea, but when I came back from watching everyone else eat their lunch, I had 10 minutes of feeling really really sick!! It's passed now, but it was awful. I had a black tea at lunch, so maybe it was that! On my 6th fast today and not had that feeling before - hope I don't get it again either!

Sorry to bring this topic up and make you feel sick
lol - I don't think you posting made me sick - just pure coincidence :-)
I thought I was alone on this. I'm the same, if I drink tea on an empty stomach I have dreadful waves of nausea for several minutes. I only ever have a cup of tea after dinner.
Ani, you mean that heavenly hot cup of tea after dinner? I love it :))
Hope today went better for you Ninaa. Did you try the ginger out? Strangely today I felt nauseous for the first time too. I had a bit of raw ginger which might have helped but I also are a little earlier than usual which definitely did.

Hi Umleila. It was a very easy fasting day for me today . I spent all day out and since i was not home i didn't crave hot tea and had 2 cans of diet coke ( i know i know it's bad but beleive me it helps my sugar craving A LOT)
I had dinner for only 300 cal and just had my second cup of hot green tea . :D
I bought fresh ginger to make as you suggested for my next fasting day which will be on Monday
Sorry to hear you feel quesy, I get that after a fast day first thing in the morning.

If you like them I would take peppermint tea, it is really good for feeling sick.

Its worth a try, good luck and hopefully it will taper off soon.
