I can't work out why people who are overweight have low vitamin d but it seems to be something to do with the whole insulin resistance story. If so, the best treatment is weight loss especially by fasting/low carb.
!

As I understand it, this is because Vit D is fat soluble. All the fat will suck up Vit D till it's saturated. Only then does the excess Vit D become accessible to the body. Add in the fact that Vit D conversion from sunlight gets less efficient with aging it's no wonder that so many older, overweight folk (including me!) are low on Vit D.

That makes sense! It would be interesting to know what kind of level of supplementation is needed to flood the adipose tissue with vit d so that there is enough available for use! (Obviously it would depend on how much body fat % one has).

Oh yes, palpitations and hot flushes...I had those, but as the hot flushes reduced in intensity so the palpitations pretty much cleared.

I have very mad palpitations because of my thyroid and I have noticed that they get worse when I've eaten too much or when I haven't eaten for a few hours. Perhaps a very full or very empty stomach could have the same effect to PVC?

Thank you all, you the female body is a strange compund of hormones and other things.

Sometimes menopause can mimic thyroid, although the GP said my thyroid levels were okay. Of course that means nothing to me.

I dont have pain with the palpitations and I do exercise as in walking and cycling, sometimes zumba with no problems. I get frustrated when I am told what its not rather than what it is.
I tend to do my own research to try and figure out the problems and the causes....

I have been in ER loads of times over the past 8 years of suffering this and had all the heart tests carried out. Thankfully all good, unfortunately in the Netherlands its really difficult to get the correct diagnosis. I had to go to Belgium when this happened the last time and they confirmed I was going through the perimenopause and my vitamin D was extremely low. That does cause irregular heartbeats.

Luckily I dont get too many hot flushes, more often night sweats but they have calmed down. I have my cardiologist appointment in 2 weeks time, so we will see what they say.

I feel better now, really strange as I have only been taking the extra vitamins for a week and stopped the fasting. I really want to start again eating 700 or so cals on the fast days to see how I feel. On the other hand I cant deal with the shaking and tremors, palps etc.......

Its sods law, I have too much fat although I am not hugely overweight, you know how hard it is to lose weight when you are over 40 ............
Today I am 48  so even more difficult lol

Xx

Carorees,
I Forgot to ask, do you mean I should eat a low carb diet all the time or just on fast days?

I dont eat a lot of bread or pasta. If I do its either spelt bread or wholegrain rice. I eat quinoa and lots of tuna, salad and veg mosly on fast days.

Im not a big cake or bsicuit eater but my downfall is chocolate, even that is dark as I read that too much sugar can cause palpitations too.......

Happy Birthday, Madlou! I hope everything goes well at the cardiologist and all your symptoms settle down. We're here regardless, so when you feel ready to start again, jump on in, the water's fine!

I'm fairly convinced that most of us have too much carbohydrate in our diets. Some cope with it better than others though. Those who cope badly end up with high insulin levels and high cholesterol etc. If you keep carbs down your insulin levels fall, which helps with loads of health issues plus your body is able to burn fat (high insulin prevents fat burning) so when you fast you should have fewer problems because you don't run out of fuel which I think is the problem for people experiencing side-effects like headache, light-headedness etc (that's my theory).

I did really well on a low carb diet some years ago but just missed being able to have rice, pasta, potatoes, and of course cake etc so I drifted back into my old eating habits. I think we should keep carbs down all the time, especially those refined carbs, but I'm not preaching because I'm not doing it!! I think that certainly fast days should be low carb and the other days you should bear in mind that too much carbs are not good. So, your usual diet looks fine for non-fast days and on fast days have no starchy or sugary food at all (that includes fruit!). Also shun all low fat diet foods as they replace the fat with sugar! We need to eat fats, but the whole fat story is complex and more is being discovered daily. In the meantime, I think one can at least feel happy about not eating low fat diet foods. The people in Krista Varady's study of alternate day fasting who ate a high fat diet on their non-fast days had just as good improvements in their cholesterol levels and weight loss as those on a so-called healthy diet (i.e., low fat).

Dark chocolate contains a lot of caffeine so that might cause palpitations if you are susceptible rather than the sugar which is generally relatively low in dark chocolate, depending how dark...I'm not talking about the Cadbury's Plain chocolate which has little cocoa, but those expensive dark chocolates that have 70% or more cocoa (which I find too bitter to eat much of, so it works as a natural brake on my chocolate consumption to ensure I only buy the high cocoa chocolate!!!).

PS Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday !

I might of missed you saying it, but did you tell your Dr you are doing IF ?

I apologise if anyone takes this the wrong way :) If you are having health problems and think in any way it is connected to/effected by IF you must tell your Dr. Let him decide if it is related.

good luck
Si

Thanks Carorees for the info, very informative.

Yes I do,buy the high cocoa choccy, minimum 70% ........oh no there are no goodies left for me

I did tell my GP I changed my diet but he wasnt really interested and would not have heard of IF anyway as its more popular in the UK than here.

thanks for all the birthday wishes xx
