Benefits & Side Effects

I have searched this forum and the internet in general about the 5:2 diet and diarrhea. It sounds like some people have it the day AFTER a fast, when they eat their first large meal in the morning. Not me. I have it starting around noon on my fast day (even if I have had nothing but coffee and/or tea) and it continues through the next morning. I have it literally about 5-6 times per day and I wonder how there is anything left in my intestines.

I told you TMI!

I have no cramping and although it's somewhat urgent it's not like the kind of diarrhea that you have to run to the bathroom. It's kind of just like "oh, I guess I need the toilet" and when I go, it's pretty much liquid.

I told you TMI!!

Is it really just me? I was doing 5:2 for several months in the Spring and it happened every time. Now back to it again and 3 fasts in and...it's happening again every time.
Well coffee does get you moving........ But no, this has not happened to me
Haha. True! But that doesn't happen to me when I have coffee with food. Or even coffee on an empty stomach and eat an hour later. Maybe it's coffee sitting on an empty stomach for a few hours?
Oh so that's what TMI is?! Yes, I guess I get a "funny tummy" when I eat after a fast...but then I think it is probably the coffee

Bean
It could be. Be interesting to see what happens if you don't have it until you start eating
There has got to be a logical, proven reason for this.
TMI - do you "go" regularly at other times.
I often have rapid exit after lunch on the day after a fast. But then I'm as regular as clock work all other times. Do you eat drink anything different on fast days, ie squash, or as Karen says loads of coffee?
It's funny, I was just saying to my OH this morning that bizarrely the morning after a fast I am straight in the loo, I don't even need to drink anything. I would have thought I would be constipated so this has really surprised me. We all have weird bowels!
I had this my first couple of months fasting - but I haven't noticed it in a while.

I'm missing a gallbladder, so I am more prone than most anyway.

Yes... This happens to me! No matter what I break my fast with, it's a fast transit!! Sometimes I get away with just some loud gurgling in my tummy..
I had it my last fast, but I think breaking my fast with over 200grams of mixed beans was enough to get anyone 'going'.
well I've been through the whole gamut I think - constipated for first month (never in my life before!), then very much like you describe, pumisimo, 3ish times, but not till the morning after the fast. No sooner had I complained of this on another string, I'm now pretty much back to normal, fingers crossed! A present for my 3 month celebration? So maybe it settles down over time? In the meantime if it's really getting to you, you could try some imodium or similar. But I think fasting is quite an adjustment for the whole gut - after all, it has nearly as many neurones as the brain! And heaps of different hormones!! So maybe you just need to speak sweetly to your belly and it will settle down eventually?
Yes, fasting seems to play havoc with my insides too, but normally the other way round., Coffee would quite often do it, but it hasn't happened on fast days. I am, as they say, 'backed up', just presently and am lovinly contemplating my prunes and figs!!
Rapid transit and me is and always has been with bread which is why I love fasting would love to always be low carb (but that's tricky) but same as @Debs it's such a bind that I look forward to my best friends now ... Prunes.

Find the coffee also moves things along too. But there is also the element that by fasting we are detoxing so maybe your gut is taking advantage and spring cleaning for you.
Such a bind?
Mm, prunes and yoghurt coming up I think, and a strong coffee to get things moving! You are right gillymary, it does seem to upset things but I also think it is doing the gut a lot of good.
I've been all over the place too... in the beginning I had much more diarrhea and usually right after I ate again. Instead of eating, I was drinking much more water and tea to get me through the fast at first!

Also, I've found that after a fast, I'm more sensitive to food. I have to start my body up slowly again (if I can go slowly), so a cup of broth, a piece of fruit, or noshing on some veggies helps before I have my little meal for the day.
