The "nanny state" is also frightening on our side of the pond - officials are all certain they know what's best, when they haven't a clue. I was on a plane recently sitting next to a woman who was pretty banged up - bruises, etc. She had tripped on the sidewalk in front of her boyfriend's apartment building, and gone flying. Knocked out a tooth, needed minor surgery, etc. She showed me the video taken by the apartment building security system, and told me that it was a good thing she'd been able to produce that video, otherwise the hospital staff would have been after her boyfriend for abuse, for sure
