Hiya all!

Spring holidays are rapidly approaching here, as is the reaching of my goal weight, so for me this means one big thing - the making of THE dress...the dress for the BIG DAY  I thought about posting all this in the Fashionista tent, or perhaps in the making things from scratch tent...but nah - I'm going to be self indulgent and start a new thread...means I can get all your wedding stories and tips too!

So, I'm getting married on New Years Day and am making my own dress. I've done bridesmaids dresses before, and helped make my sisters' dresses (mum made their's), but this will be the first time I'm going it alone...so big fingers crossed! It is a little nerve racking.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a dress designer, and used to draw evening gowns and wedding dresses constantly. I'm a bit out of practice with the drawing now (life took quite a different turn!) but I've come up with rough sketches for two designs that I'm pretty happy with:

Dress 1 - Soft & a bit boho - embroidered chiffon over crepe (maybe bias cut)

Dress 2 - very fitted lace over satin

I'll keep you updated as things progress, but I'd love to hear your thoughts and stories too!
Oh my gosh how pretty!!! I especially love #2 - how lovely!!!

Congratulations on goal weight and your big day. Everyone's going to love your dress :-)
#2 most definitely. It is youthful and draws the eye up. I don't know what shape you are but it should be flattering to most body types. I love how it skims the hips.
Congratulations on your big day :clover:
I love 2 as well, my only concern with a fitted frock would be the weather on NYD in Brisvegas, if it is hot and humid.
Having got married in DMs on the quiet, I have no useful advice though!!!
Both gorgeous, but I actually prefer the first one, ie that's the one that I would chose for me. It's more traditional I think. But it depends on your body shape what will suit you best. The second one could enhance the hips and tummy??

You are very clever to be making your own dress - that will make the day even more special :) :)

Have fun finalizing the design and creating the end product. :)
How exciting and clever. I did used to make stuff, eg bridesmaid dress for my mums second wedding. But am limited to taking up trousers and curtains theses days.
So hats off to you for this indeed.
I love both, the second one is tum skimming and as said already it depends on your figure, make it fit and flatter your good bits.
Look forward to seeing the updates.
Oh wow @peonyblue, that is REALLY impressive. Both the drawing and the fact that you are so...sew...talented! I dont think I could pick either design.
For my wedding I had an organza cape over the dress that tied in front, a bit like your second drawing. The cape was the train and had a hood in lieu of a vail. So for the dancing the whole lot came off easily. I loved organising my wedding (which was 10 years ago on 10th September). My friends and I made everything, except for my dress!

I must admit that I glued up some hems yesterday
Great drawings (impressed) and I do think I like no2 the best:)
In my pre-marriage days I made 3 ball gowns and 2 wedding gowns plus my own, but they where all made from bought patterns. All except my wedding gown turned out rather good though.
Oh, how exciting @PeonyBlue. SO much to look forward too.
How talented you are- hat off to you!
I like design 1. A bit soft but very modest. Is that a wee jacket/bolero over the top? If so wht's it like on the shoulders underneath? If it's going to be hot and humid being able to remove a layer may be helpful. Just a thought.
Do you have access to lots of fabric and stuff?
Looking forward to following your preparations.
I cannot believe how talented you are - I wouldn't be able to sew or draw anything like that, attempting a wedding dress is just amazing!

I like the first one best, probably because I'm short and pear shaped and the second one wouldn't work on me, but it all depends on your figure...
Hi @PeonyBlue, congratulations on your coming wedding!
Both dresses are gorgeous. How talented you are. I like the second dress, very flattering. Whichever dress you choose will be lovely and exciting for us to see you wearing it. :)
Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding! I envy your talent.
Both dresses look lovely, and perhaps the first one is lighter, but I like number 2 best.

Good luck,
Bracken.
