Well I wish it WAS a fast day some of these combos are making me nauseous   ...I feel like a nun in a whorehouse here: Carbs...cake carbs, red carbs (wine), bread carbs, carbs and more carbs that's what I crave on this diet!
Hot buttered toast and fig rolls
"Nutritional yeast (or 'nooch' as those trendy americans call it) is weird yellowy flakes that look like dandruff, smell like cheesy chicken stock and seem like they must be foul beyond description. It's found lurking on the shelves at a health food shop and vegans often use it as a source of vitamin B12 and to make something approaching a cheesy flabour".

I've recently discovered nutritional yeast, I add it to soups and like you greenmonster I top crackers with it but instead of the butter I use peanut butter or tahini, I haven't tried adding salt though, brilliant idea! Some of it ends up in my lap but that's part of the fun, I just pile on more then.
Ooh Coffeetime, I love nutritional yeast, I eat it straight out of the box sometimes, I'll have to try it on crackers!

Otherwise I love peanut butter and pretzels and peanut butter and banana on toast!
aamy wrote: BTW: Whatjis Marmite

Marmite is a yeast extract spread, savoury and quite strong flavoured (just a thin spread is usually enough!).

My dad didn't know what it was either when he moved over here from the Netherlands, mum had him make my sisters lunch sandwiches one day and apparently he spread it thick like jam and made my sister eat it all. She went right off marmite after that, poor thing.

I think it's similar to what the Australians call Vegemite.
Marmite's nothing like vegemite. Well, ok a bit similar but Vegemite is opaque and you need more of it than the glossy brown elixir that is marmite (food of the gods). I had an Aussie flatmate once and we used to get really quite heated when we argued about which was better. I guess it's what you've grown up with.

I remember being off sick from school one day and on tv there was a programme about how they make marmite (it was stuff leftover from the brewing process I think - so..recycling!) There's even someone who's job it is to taste the batches of marmite to make sure it's all the same.

As you can see I quite like marmite. I reckon nutritional yeast is in the same kind of food group - marmite's like ultra concentrated, ultra salty nooch on acid. Kind of.
I'm going to try making peanut butter Izzy, and almond butter ~ I bought a huge pack of almonds ready to do it but ate most of them.
I'm off to buy some more today, I hope I won't be so greedy this time!
I bake our own bread and one of the favourites, which always goes down well with visitors .......

cheese and marmite bread :like:

mix dough, roll out as if making a swiss roll and spread with 2 tablespoons of marmite, spread grated cheese over the top
roll up and bake in oven

fantastic toasted

Well that is very suggestive as you said it is what you have grown up with.
Also as you have already mention above age old said argument vegemite vs marmite has already been an concept you have experienced so I wont subject you to another ,but I will just say for those who have not had such pleasures vegemite is far far superior to marmite in every way .

And I also like McDonald chips and ice cream together haven't had it in forever but it surely is another combo that is hard to bet.
Ha ha Tammz I won't take the bait - I know which is better anyway...

coffeetime, good luck with the almond butter. I make it with just plain raw almonds and I prefer the taste to the bought stuff which I think is made with roasted almonds. Thought I was going to break the food processor when I first turned it on with the almonds but if you stick with it and keep scraping it down with a spatula you'll get there eventually. Can take about 10 mins of processing to get it really silky but it's so worth it. I also add a pinch of salt to bring out the flavour. Love it on porridge with jam :o)
I like cheese (tasty cheddar or monteray jack) with a drizzle of honey and a sprinkling of freshly ground coffee (what you use to make an espresso).

You can use instant coffee like Nescafe if you are desperate but freshly ground coffee beans give a greater flavour punch.

Now, why did I open this post on a fast day?
I'm not keen on celery but I love peanut butter on chicory leaves. I used to love Vegemite. I like Marmite but find Vegemite a little sweeter. Of course thats gone too since gluten-free became the watch word. I got some Meridian yast extract from the local Holland and Barrett but its horridly bitter.

The post about sprinkling coffee on cheese and honey, I have come across that one before. My son is a chef and he and his mates had heard about it and they were all addicted. Didn't really hit the spot for me though.
Well I always thought Marmite was sweeter, although it has been years. We used to have it as kids. Then there was Promite and that was definately sweeter than Vegemite. All are good with on toast topped with cheese.
I think I remember Jamie Oliver doing the honey/coffee/cheese thing on tv once. Tried it but it didn't do much for me either.

I used to have cheese with gravy granules in a sarnie.

And strawberries with balsamic vinegar are v nice but I guess its hardly a weird combo.

Yes Marmite under cheese on toast is heavenly. Haven't had cheese on toast in ages....
I can't say that I eat something that I consider disgusting but I do like combinations of different tastes. I remember going to Aberdeen Steak House just for the fried camembert with the cranberry sauce.

I grew up with melon&ham, cheese&figs, steak&pineapple etc, so I find them very normal.
