I'm Claire born in London but lived in Birmingham for 22 years with a brief sojurn in Strasbourg and New York. Then I married a Norfolk boy so I've lived in North Norfolk for the last 30 years. My family live in North Wales so I trek over there every couple of months.

I remember being taken into Napier on late night shopping jaunts (no such thing at the time in UK all shops closed at teatime, no Sunday opening then either) and also being taken to Saturday morning films (no TV then in NZ!) eating hokey pokey (?) ice cream (wow could do with some right now, lol!) and also 'lolly scrambles' quite a shock for a shy little English girl, who was used to waiting her turn, and the pebbly beach just beyond our road.
Would love to go back someday to visit, as I believe it's very different round there now (and quite arty (!) which would suit me just fine!)
Hi silverdarling
I think that Hawkes Bay didnt have TV as they are surrounded by a mountain range and only the main centres had it in the early 60s. Hokey pokey ice cream is still available and very popular, one of the things kiwis miss when we are overseas. Lots of wineries thru Hawkes Bay now, DH and I Iove Napier for a weekend break. Napier has also rediscovered the art deco heritage drom the rebuilding following a quake in 1931, and is the second best art deco city in the world after Miami

Hi Julie and Silverdarling. I grew up in Bay View. If you don't know it, it is a village just north of Napier. I remember my neighbours getting tv mid sixties. Ah pebble beaches. Living in the tropics now means I find them odd now. I nearly always have a hockey pokey ice cream when I am home. Do you remember Rush Munro's? We used to take Sunday drives to Hastings for them. They sell it all over now. It's still the best!
