Re: Pets?

I've recently got 3 chickens Feathers, Ginger and Henny-Penny (actually the are my youngest daughter's she had them for her birthday). We got them at the end of November and they were in rather a sorry state, they are now looking fat and well fed but are yet to lay an egg. Hubby wants to rename them Sunday dinner 1,2 and 3 if they don't get on and start laying.

They are traumatised this week by the snow. Not at all happy, have spent most of the week in the coop bickering (much like the kids in the house)

My friend who has had chickens for years says fat chickens don't lay eggs...perhaps you should put them on a diet too!

What a lovely thread - I have a springer spaniel called Poppy and she is adorable (well to me she is). She is as we speak, curled up next to me, snoring like a good 'un!

I would love a cat but other half is allergic. However I have some friends that have two rescue cats called Digby and Domino so when I need cat cuddles I pop over...

Awww Nikipins - your hens sound great, I wouldn't be coming out of the coop either if I was them - far too cold ;)

I have 2 dogs and 2 chooks.

Laying chooks are supposed to be quite thin, so don't worry if they are on the light side, it's better for them.

Omlet have an excellent forum if you need to look anything up ever. I feed them warm porridge (no salt)on days when it's cold or hot layer's mash. You wet it until it's a damp crumb.

Mine are retired from egg laying now but are great pets.

Don't we all love our animals! After always having had dogs, we now are down - or up to two cats, a ginger tom who my hubby fostered when my mum was past looking after him ... he had my mum's cat so I had to marry him when he asked ... lol! and just before christmas my daughter moved house and had a baby and so we now have her little Tabby who is here to stay, she gives the big ginger a hard time, but acts like a lapdog with me. Hubby has a wee aviary with some finches so son-in-law wants us to rescue some battery hens, hmmmm.... watch this space!

We have two rescued Greyhounds, Hendrix a black two year old boy with starry night pattern ~(a subdued white brindling - only white flecks on his black coat) and Theo a fawn boy of six years old, with dark ears nose and eyes.

As you can see Theo likes long walks and Hendrix like to read.

I'm very taken with our hens lolli, eggs or not. They are rather stupid but also very funny. They come running when they hear the back door open or my YD calls them because she always gives them treats.
They are much happier this week now the snow has gone, they are busy wrecking the lawn again just to annoy my husband and pecking on conservatory door when we are sitting in there eating our dinner.

oh, I can relate to this !
We (family ) have Zola who is 9yo Wire haired Vizsla .I Have a horse now 19yo. I have had her since she was five, she's a shire x welsh with a big bum ,feathery legs and facial hair (the bearded lady)
My hubby is half way through building the hen palace featured in Poultry today and I'm so excited about getting some chooks.
I have spent mega bucks buying the fabulous Cotswold legbar eggs and have decided it would be cheaper to have our own. However I have read that you may need to spend over £300 before you get an egg.
got to go as the good doctor is on Sarah Milligan show.

I can relate to the big spend before you get an egg as we seem to have spent a small fortune with out a single egg from the 3 chooks. I would probably recommend waiting until the spring to get you chickens as their egg laying is stimulated by day length so this is a bad time at the moment. I would also recommend getting them from a decent breeder, our chooks were a mess when we got them (worms, scaley legs and mites) not officially rescue chickens but as good as, I think they think they have gone to heaven with all the space and food they now have but there has been a lot of catch up with their health since we have had them another reason they have not yet laid an egg.

Hi Nipikins , I am expecting it to be at least a smonth before we get the birds in. Hubby has a lot of other stuff to do and work is slow.he also has to build a pen, although when we get some electric fencing up I'm hoping to free range them.

I have four cats so am well on my way to mad cat lady status. I would love a dog but I work too many hours so I volunteer at a local greyhound rescue - your two are gorgeous Dougie. I get lots of doggie affection and plenty of exercise with walking 20 plus dogs!

Oh a thread after my own heart! Like Caroline I live in a bit of a zoo. two gorgeous black rescue cats, a rescue choc lab, a black lab, four highland ponies and a Welsh cob, numerous chickens. I've kept chooks for more than 20 years and love having their fantastic eggs. You can't buy a decent egg really as I've found on odd occasions when we have had to. £300 till you get an egg? Eh? Find your local smallholders association and make some contacts for free hatching eggs or surplus stock. Convert a shed and off you go. I can see some chicken chats coming on here!
