What a great topic!! I have a menagerie too - 4 dogs, 2 cats, 2 goats and 2 hens. We did have 4 hens until December when Mr Fox came visiting..... Since then the remaining hens have been rehoused in a more secure building and just roam free in the garden with the goats and the big dog during the daytime. I am now paranoid about making sure they are all securely locked up well before night falls! I am thinking about getting 2 or 4 more hens but I'm not quite sure how to introduce them, I've heard it can be tricky. The goats are a joy, very cheeky and fun but they do eat just about ecerything in the garden except oleander. We are also a foster family for a dog charity down here in the South of France and we are due to welcome an elderly labrador this week for a short or longer stay and I'm quite excited about that.
Loving hearing about everyone else's pets and realising I'm not that mad after all!
by the way I had a cat who was overweight and I was advised by a vet friend to always leave food out and he would sort it out himself. This worked and I have been feeding all my animals like this ever since and have never had any weight issues again. Sometimes they eat more and sometimes less, but they obviously work out when they are full and no stress that they need to empty the bowl or worry when the next meal will be. I don't feed the goats like this as i really think they would not stop until they explode, every morning when they are let our they run to check if the hens have any grain left from the night before, they are constantly trying to work out new ways to get into the locked room where the grain is kept!!
