Hi everyone
I am still on holdidays so at present I read about a book a day. I am presently into Clive Cussler and reading my way through his Numa Files. The technical stuff is sometimes a bit much but I love his sense of humour the way the heros are people that are not perfect and of course it they always win. I like adventure/phantasie books that are not too cruel. If I read a book I want to relax not cringe or worse get bad dreams or have the contents on my mind for days.

The other authors I like are James Patterson, Raymond E Feist, David Gemmel, David Graham and Jack Higgins.

I tend to go through phases where one author interests me more than the others and then I'll swap again. I have a kindle and it really makes it easy for me to choose my books.

Back to work next week and then the reading will stop again.
Yes, MCC, O'Brian does throw you in at the deep end when it comes to sailing technology; but somehow it's still thrilling--especially when I started to understand it a little! As in the Harry Potter books, O'Brian's characters become deeper and reveal more of themselves as the series goes on. Jack is really much more intelligent than he lets on.

Do let us know how you like Rowling's newest effort.
Marybeth, Everyone says you have to get through the first 2 Jack Aubrey books before really getting hooked. I've got #2 and will read it soon. I've started Cookoo's Calling today and I'm 25% through it (according to Kindle)--it's good fun so far (a murder mystery). I just noticed you are from NY--practically neighbors (compared to everyone else here).
I'm also currently reading game of thrones, watched the series and then felt sad so decided to relive it through the book. It's my first post baby book and I struggled for a long time after having my daughter to find time and the concentration to read. I'm pleased my son is such a good sleeper as means my brain is functioning much better already although I'm not able to read as fast as I like! Thoroughly enjoying it though.
I am in
Love the idea of a book club ,love reading and always on the hunt for a good book
Just read and can highly recommend Big Brother by Lionel Shriver
Will take a look at some of the other suggestions
Our last choice for our book club was 'A cat called Bob' I noticed someone else mentioned it. We were all amazed about how much we didn't know about the life of "The big issue" sellers but none of us who are cat owners were the least surprised by BOB. I am currently re-reading Dr McKendricks's 'The great cholesterol con' I have it in paperback, which I have loaned to a friend who has a problem, but as it is also on my kindle I can read bits as and when I feel like. Not sure what is next on the list but I never got into Larsen's trilogy, shame that but that's books for you.

Ballerina x
'The Time Travellers Wife' was a blubber fest for me.
let's nominate a book to read, say starting in September. By that time the holiday season will be over for most of us and it will give us time to discuss nominations and attract more forum book lovers. I would like to start the ball rolling by nominating a previously mentioned book, "Big Brother" by Lionel Shriver ( of We have to talk about Kevin" fame. It has a subject, weight and food, which is pretty apt for us and from the reviews pretty good, thought provoking stuff. how about it? And how do we go about nominations and votes? :?:
Dhana - great idea and suggestion for first book

Re nominations and votes - I'm sure Moogie might be able to sort something out, or suggest the best way of doing this ...

And for those folks who might not want to buy the book, remember you can get it from your local library    !
I love the idea, a sort of 5:2 book club, it will get me reading books which I wouldn't normally read.

Over the years I've read everything I could get hold of, I fell in love with 19th century classics, a love affair which lasted decades. Recently I've been reading mainly science books, there's so much I don't know and I desperately want to find out about while my brain is still active. I started studying Open University science courses as something to occupy my mind in retirement. I can't afford it now so just read the books.....this doesn't rule out reading other books though!

I'll go along with everyone else over the book choice - now I'm looking forward to the first book!
Silverdarling,
I nominate you to organise it! You have all the required skills and experience to sort through the nominations and arrange the votes - what do you say? Seconded anyone? :?:
Seconded!
GULP! And GULP! (Not sure there is an emoticon for GULP!) maybe

Of course am most flattered ... will try to do my 'umble bestest ... :geek: :geek: (that's supposed to represent a librarian with specs  )

(But just ping some chocolate over this way, and I'll do it!   )
Just let me pop along to Bond Street...ping! catch! Charbonnel et Walker little round pink box of truffles do you?
That'll do very nicely - GULP  :silly:  all gone! (That was quick!)

Will PM Moogie to get the lowdown on the best way of going about things ...

Oh and another thing ... I need someone to play 'Madge' to my 'Edna Everage' ... Your duties will be shelving, tidying, stamping books out, and shushing the noisy gang that I just know will be on here very soon (while I am la-di-da-ing about the place, choosing the books and so forth  ) Volunteers (or nominations??) anyone, hmmmmm?? :?:

Meanwhile, WATCH THIS SPACE !!
