Can someone indicate what coffee with a splash of skimmed milk is? I can't abide black coffee but notice it is a fan favourite of Fasters, so I wonder why a splash of skimmed milk makes much difference.. I peg it around 5 calories - would that be accurte?

5 cals sounds about right, so no problem there. I think if people are trying to avoid adding milk to coffee (or tea etc) it is because they are going for what I call a 5:20 Max which is 20+ hours with minimal calorie intake i.e. only the few cals you get from black tea, coffee, herbal tea. Because this might (it is only 'might') have more health benefits.

In my own mind I think of:
  • 5:20 Zero - water only for 20+ hours i.e. until evening (does anyone do this apart from maybe Dr Valter Longo!?)
  • 5:20 Max - black tea/coffee, herbal tea, bouillon (maybe) - until evening
  • 5:20 Light - low calories until evening i.e. allowing milk or (very) small snacks

Hi twicky, I answered your question on yesterday's page but maybe u missed it. Here it is again ;)
"This is my first fast day and I measured out 100ml of skimmed milk which is 35kcal and 3.4protein. Like u I don't like black tea or coffee however today I have alternated black/milk and it's not as bad as I thought.
Hope that helps"

You count green tea as herbal tea? It's the same stuff as black tea just less oxidised... I've had my first peppermint tea of the day already.

Well, I seem to have got thru my first ever fast day yesterday with relative ease.
I decided to Go for Gold and not eat until I felt I really had to over the 36hours, and using my new mantra (purloined from the 5:2 book)of Refrain,Restrain,Divert and Distract I only had 35kcal of skimmed milk in teas/coffees, and 30kcal of leaf spinach which I ate at dinner time. Also fitted in a morning and evening excercise class which helped to focus the mind.

Not sure it's always going to be that easy tho, probably first day motivation was high ;)

Good luck to all today's fasters :)

Well I made it through, despite a lovely work colleague giving me a packet of Jaffa cakes! Being in Aus I haven't seen them for years and they are currently leering at me from my desk! It is terribly empowering to know that I can eat one, or two, tomorrow!!

On my 3rd fast now, usually do Mon &Thurs but like most people on here gave yesterday a miss. Finding the fasting not too bad though bit disappointed to only have lost 1/2lb in my 1st week. Also having real problems sleeping on my feed day after fasting, anyone else find this?

Thanks - 5:20 Light is fine by me (the others seem a bit hardcore!) At least I am seeing the results and still able to indulge in some pleasures dfuring the day of a fast !!
I'm fasting today. Woke up with a headache though which isn't a great start! I have an M&S at the bottom of my road so I'll be popping in & only looking at the fuller longer meals! I must not look at cake! ( particularly carrot cake, somebody posted on the FB 5:2 page that is has a whopping 833 calories a slice :o :o :o )

God sorry! I have mentioned the C word on a fasting thread
I am fasting today. I've had black coffee and am drinking lots of water and herbal teas until I get hungry. I have a small apple in the handbag and a bottle of water in case I feel really hungry when I am out.

Fasting on Wednesday was better than I anticipated. My evening meal was a delicious tuna marinaded in lime juice, chilli, garlic and ginger. I just put it in the oven for about 8 mins. I had roasted red pepper and courgette with Italian herbs. Also had spinach with fried onion.

I'm surprised that I can last so many hours without food. Feel alert and have more energy than I expected to have. Lets hope this "high" keeps going so I can accomplish my goal of shifting 1.5 stones AND keeping it off.

Have a good day everyone.

OK, I'll amend that: Almost all non-black teas taste like boiled leaves in water...not quite so snappy but accurate ;)

I can just about manage redbush and peppermint, but only black coffee actually feels like it has some body to it! I like adding cinnamon to my coffee as it makes a change and cinnamon is 'supposedly' able to lower insulin resistance.

Hi all
Well half way through the day and so far so good. I've had an odd hunger twinge but breakfast seems to have kept most at bay and I am topping up with fruit & herb teas.
Caroline I too am not fussed by many fruit teas but I do like the London Fruit & Herb company green tea & blackcurrant. I get it from Holland & Barrett and find that it is quite fruity rather than that lingering green tea taste.
It's a nice day here, just a shame I'm stuck at my desk :(
I am enjoying the hunger feeling as for so many years I have eaten regardless of whether hungry or not and it feels positive tuning into my body on fast days.
Have a good day everyone.

I am fasting today, will eat my 500 cals tonight at some point. This is my second fast and so far so good. :)

My revisit of fasting started again today. I normally spread the 500 cals over the day but as yet had zero cals and 20 hrs in. Really hard for me though.
