Want to start on the fast diet
21 Jan 2013, 17:08
Hello,
I'm very new to this. I would like a bit of advice really - how best to get started?
Hiya motherofthebride and welcome to the forums & the 5:2 way of life.

I think the most important piece of advice for anyone new to this lifestyle is to make sure you plan your fasts! Work out how you're going to 'spend' your calories and have your meals made or planned ahead of time. It's all too easy to try winging it on your first fast and ending up hungry and grumpy ;) With a bit of planning it goes so smoothly!
Hi just wanted to say hello as I started today as well x
Hi,
How are you getting on with it?
I had heard about this diet and was looking it up online earlier. I haven't really started as such but am looking into what I should eat and how it works. Still reading all about it at this stage.
Have you fasted today?
Hi,
I've just joined this site and many thanks for allowing me and although I watched the Horizon programme and read the book this is my first "proper" day of fasting.
Not been too bad as busy at work and managed on black coffee, water and hot ribena but in the house on my own tonight so that may be more of a problem,Have just had a piece of fish, cauli and broccoli plus a yogurt so hopefully this would count as a succesful day.
What I really wanted to know was i know Michael Moseley says he eats what he wants on his non fast days but do most people stick to a rough limit either calories, low carb etc as otherwise surely it just cancels out the fast days?
Thanks for any help :)
M x
No. That's the point, Buzzard. You just eat as normal on the other days. Otherwise it's a calorie counting diet, which it isn't. Only on fast days.
The science says most people don't manage to compensate for the fast days. Also after a few weeks you will find your appetite decreases, so calorie counting is not necessary.

Having said all that, I keep a rough track out of interest!
I need to know exactly what I can eat on the fasting days? I'm no good at working out the amount of calories. I have ordered the book - does this have ideas of what to eat in it?
Yes it does have meal plans. They are based on having breakfast and dinner (no lunch), so if, like me, you want to save all your calories for the evening, it's not that useful.
There are some links to some great calorie counting sites in the resources section. Including a recipe calorie calculator where you can enter your own recipe and it calculates the calories!
i just wrote a massive reply on my mobile but hit the wrong button and lost it. argh! will retype when next at my desk, sorry.
Hi Wildpasty!

How have you been getting on with the fasting? I see you joined this site the same day as me. I have since read the book and am now ready to start.
I shall fast tomorrow - fingers crossed!
I'm planning to have a boiled egg for breakfast and then take it from there. I am working tomorrow so hopefully it will be easier. I shall take a cup-a-soup to work and some fruit if I need to eat something. And then dinner time - I've still to decide what to eat?
What have you been eating on your fasting days?

Anyone with easy food tips - quick breakfast ideas and dinner ideas gratefully accepted!

Tomorrow will be my first fast day eeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!

Its a working day so that should make it easier. I shall try herbal tea - not even sure if I shall like it ;) we'll see.
Hiya, I have been doing ok. I had my second fasting day yesterday and it went without a hitch, have been pretty much sticking to around 1700 calories on non-fasting days and my jeans seem to be getting a little looser. Hope you are doing ok x
