Introduce Yourself!

Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Agreed, Loubelia. Unfortunately quite a lot of people come to this diet attracted by the idea that they can 'pig out' for 5 days (the Daily Mail even wrote an article about it with a headline like that). I think you are right too about the exercise, a new study by Dr Varady supports that too.

I guess here we are making a distinction, on a 'feed' day, between having your normal TDEE every day, or having the occasional 'feast' day (over TDEE) which should be balanced by a 'frugal' day (under TDEE).

I think a feast/frugal strategy would be dangerous for most of us, and it overcomplicates things, but we are all going to feast occasionally (like me yesterday) so we say it isn't a disaster because (a) you can match it with a frugal day and (b) maybe (Caroline's experience) the combination could actually be a bit better for weight loss than 2 normal feed days.

I generally follow talkinpeace's plan of 2 x fast, 2 x under TDEE, 2 x bit over TDEE, 1 day splurge. I don't plan it that way (well apart from the fasts), just how things turn out!
