ADVISE PLEASE
26 Mar 2013, 12:19
Hi i am currently on a fast day and finding it so very easy! Just wondered if one of you lovely people can help me with something?

I have chosen to do 4;3 as i find it so very easy to go without food. I never eat breakfast and rarely eat lunch.

I have chosen to use my 500 calorie allowance in semi skimmed milk for my tea's and coffees on my fast days, which means i won't be eating food. This may seem extreme to some but i feel it will be best for me. Can anyone tell me though if this will cause me problems with weightloss? Will it slow things down? will my body hold onto the fat etc.

Advise and views very greatfully recieved many thanks and love to all Donna x

Hi Donna

It probably won't affect weightloss. I believe there are a few people whose bodies are more sensitive to fasting and take action to try to prevent weightloss, but for most it should be fine. Probably it is more important to make sure you eat well on the feed days though. We think that you need to eat your recommended daily allowance on the feed days to get the best benefit.

Good luck with it!

Dear Caroline,

Thankyou so much for your reply. It really is a god send to find this new way of eating for me, i am sick of being told you have to eat little and often all day everday, and get frowned at when i don't eat breakfast!

I have kept and bred dogs all of my life and each week give them a complete starve day for 24 hours they have nothing but water, my thoughts being that in the wild they wouldn't catch and eat everyday. I have had dogs for 34 years never had an overweight dog, not any health problems! I am all for it. When we lived in caves we wouldn't have eaten everday yes finally i feel i am right!

Thanks again Love Donna x

500 calories of semi skimmed milk ?

I make that one litre, 35g or protein and 48g of sugars.

donnah, just having 1 litre of semi-skimmed milk for all your fast day calories is within the rules but I would question whether it is an ideal balance. Most of us have too much dairy in our diet anyway. When we lived in caves we wouldn't have drunk cows milk! As Caroline said, if you want to do it this way just make sure you are getting the right food on the feed days.

Hi all

I am not suggesting i will drink all of the milk in 24 hours! It's just that i am a t pot and the thought of not being able to have a cuppa when i need one is worse than doing three days fasting! LOL

I'm confused then.

You're going to have 500 calories in total over the three days ?

As opposed to 500 per day ?

There's no problem with having semi-skimmed milk in tea and coffee on fast days, I often do that myself. But as you say you won't get through 1 litre of milk (=500 calories) that way. In fact I ignore the calories in the top-up milk because it must be pretty small (10 ml per cup is 5 calories), except when I have tried to go with zero calories until evening (which is not a requirement of the diet).

So are you thinking of having much much less than 500 cals total on a fast day?
Re: ADVISE PLEASE

Sorry i do confuse people! LOL

My plan is to fast for 3 days a week, not all together. spread out though the week. On my fast days i am only allowing myself 500 calories, which would suit me better taking these calories in drinks rather than food. My fast days will not include any food passing my lips, just drinks! Sorry to confuse you.

But i won't worry if i get to the end of my fast day and have calories i haven't used up!

I have 5 stone to lose i also suffer with polycystic ovarian syndrome which causes problem with weith gain and insulin spikes. So think this is the way forward for me to go

Cheers Donna x

It will not impact your weight loss.

Try some of the low carb milk replacements like almond or coconut based "milks" - Kara coconut milk is good in tea apparently.

That would hit your PCOS / insulin issues with less sugar than the semi skimmed.

It isn't clear to me where your 500 calories are coming from if the milk is about 1/3 of that per day.

Dear Dominc,

I am not going to worry about my calorie intake on fast days, of course i won't go over the 5oo on fast day's but if at the end of the 24 hour fast i have calories left it won't worry me. I haven't eaten a thing since 8pm last night which was a ham sandwich and salad. I have had 2cups of tea this morning with my semi skimmed milk and sweetners, couple of glasses of water and i feel fantatic. My fast should end at 8pm tonight but again if i am not hungry i won't eat until tomorrow when i would normally without the fast.

Before this fasting i would never normally eat until the evening, missing breakfast, and lunch is very normal for me, i would just eat once a day on most days.

So far feeling fab! Long may it continue x

Hi Donnah,
I think it is a bit extreme to only drink tea, albeit with milk, and nothing else every alternate day. I appreciate you love your tea, but even so I think even you might struggle on such a strict regime, and what about a variety of protein (not only from dairy), vitamins and minerals. A better approach may be to start with 2 days a week and see how that goes first. I do appreciate you have a lot to lose and are raring to go but don't let your enthusiasm blind you to the possible downsides of tea only! Good luck :clover: (whatever you decide!)

If you can do it that way (no solids on a fast day) I would expect you to lose weight faster, Donna. Don't overdo it though - keep to your normal consumption on feed days. Best of luck!
