Yes, the studies I've read on thyroid function during fasting were done in normal people. The changes are quite complex! This study looked at the dynamics of thyroid function during fasting: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6403568
This study in fasting, mildly obese females suggests that: 1) The transient suppression of serum TSH during early fasting is not TRH mediated. 2) Fasting does not alter plasma TRH levels. 3) A temporal sequence of changes in serum thyroid hormone indices occurs in fasting, this being an initial rise in FT4 (10 h) followed by a fall in both serum TT3/TT4 (12-14 h) and TSH (30-36 h) and finally by a rise in TrT3/TT4 levels (48 h). This sequence of events suggests that the initial inhibition of serum TSH levels in early fasting results from the acute elevation in FT4 levels, and that the reestablishment of normal serum TSH levels with continued fasting is associated with declining serum TT3 levels.

Shows that thyroid function is reduced during fasting (a response designed to reduce metabolism so as to conserve energy).

Did any of them measure metabolic rate ?

Redhead, there was a TV programme about 4 - 5 years ago showing that soups were more filling than solid food. Can't remember all the details but the experiment I think most people remember was an army corps: half had a roast dinner on a plate and the other half had the same meal but liquidised into soup. The people who had the soup were reported as feeling fuller for longer than the solid food eaters.

AnnieW, see viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4796. I've just watched Fat Sick and Nearly Dead after a new member BlueSkye pointed me to it. I'm reading about juice fasting now - my interest/ fascination with fasting is evolving all the time! Liquid fasting seems to be a really interesting area with limited hard science but plenty of inspiring stories out there.

A great book about the benefits of water is "your bodies many cries for water" by Dr Batmanghelidj. A good book about green smoothies and the benefits of a raw food diet is "Green for Life" by Victoria Boutenko. Another interesting book on health benefits of green drinks and a mostly raw diet is "The pH Miracle" by Robert O Young. There are many more 'health' books which extol the benefits of liquid fasting.
Guys - just bringing this back up to the top. I'm wondering about the difference between the different types of liquid fasting? Has anyone experienced good weight loss by using just soups as opposed to no calories?

I find this discussion very interesting and am going to do my first liquid fast tomorrow.

In the past I've done 7 day juice diet (Jason Vale) and by around day 3 / 4 I felt amazing. I had so much energy and literally felt a buzz.

I was up at 6.30am doing house work (if you know me this is amazing - my boyf now husband was shocked to say the least!).

Anyway 'juicing' is great but time consuming and expensive. If I could get the same benefit from doing liquid fasts then I'm in!

I did 6 x 36 liquid fasts with calories came in around 300 cals on 5 fasts as I thought I could handle it with combo of clear broths, miso and bullion, teas with skim milk and soy in one coffee. herbal teas water and if I needed stevia as sweetener. I had headaches which persisted despite strategies but my weight loss was 3kg for that month. So that means for me it was effective. Am happier on 5:2 + 16:8 now a personal choice.
