Time to gain/lose weight
18 Jun 2013, 08:41
I was feeling rather chuffed at the middle of last week. I 'felt' slimmer, and according to the scales I'd lost another few pounds. I only weigh myself once every couple of weeks, always with the same scales.

However, at the weekend. Nothing seemed to fit, I felt all fat and bulgey, and stupidly when I went to a friend's house I couldn't help myself to hop on her scales which showed me as 5lbs more than my normal scales.

It had been after a day or two of excess (usual weekend wine and carbs)

Is it possible to gain weight that fast?!!

Yes sadly it can be but equally easy to fast it off again. Chin up and carry on :0)

Hi Katastrofee,

Ugh what a shame, scales can be so disheartening! Firstly, I can be 3 pounds up on a different pair of scales (weighing at same time as my own) so try not to place too much importance on the number you saw. Secondly, I had a week like this a fortnight ago - had been good as gold and felt really bloated and stayed the same weight. I was so disappointed, but it turned out to by cyclical, and one week later lost 2 pounds. You will get the benefit of the fasts, just might take another week! When I've had carbs and wine I also seem to hold onto extra water, that could explain the rise on the scales.

Keep at it!

Water retention/bloatedness from wine/carbs. They weren't your own scales - you should weigh on the same scales for an accurate indication of ups/downs. Long and short - yes, weight can fluctuate greatly from day to day, that's why you should only weigh once a week at most, at the same time, on the same scales for a true result.

Have you read my topic #whyscalesincrease? It explains why the number on the scales doesn't tell you much about how much fat your body contains as the scales can't tell the difference between fat, water, muscle, food in your gut etc.! When we say we want to lose weight we really mean we want to lose fat, but there is no easy, reliable way of measuring it.

Oh dear - the catastrophe there, really, was getting on someone else's scales. Stick to your own Katastrofee!! I did the exact same thing about 8 months ago, and weighed half stone more than I thought I did - problem was that it was my GP's scales  However, was back there again last week and he could see how much I've now lost - that put the smile back on his face :victory: Stick with it and it'll all start to trend downwards shortly - which is what is important, not the daily ups and downs during the week, they don't really count!! :clover:

The road to madness, sadness and alcoholic dependence is to use someone else's scales, DON'T DO IT! It hurts,

Totally agree! Use one set of scales and preferably weigh in at the same time every day to get a clear idea of your weight, then track your weight and watch the trend.
