Weight Maintenance

I know the BMI calculation is a crude measure and all that but at last, for the first time in a very very long time I just moved into the normal range :-)

My waist to hip ratio is 0.76 woo hoo :like: :like:

I've read people talk about fat %, and I wanted to ask, is this a calculation that you do or is this something you measure using a certain type of scales? if the latter, any recommendations? :?:

Thanks!

Jen
It's something that Body Composition scales tell you. I have an Omron one that I got for my birthday (Yes my life really is that exciting)
Most people use special scales (well not all that special as everywhere sells them), but you can also work it out by measuring various places. There's a link in the resources section to guide you through estimating body fat. Here it is:

Thanks both! Would you recommend the scales? may be this will be my Christmas present to myself :-)
I'm pleased with my scales, but have seen different brands cheaper since I got them, specifically in one of the discount supermarkets,(Aldi or Lidl) which I'm not sure have got to the US yet. Also Amazon had them in their "lightning deals" section over the Black Friday week.
I have an Omron handheld. I have had it for years. Easy to set up and very reliable.
I bought some salter ones from tesco direct, £30 something pounds. Don't have anything to compare with but the fat % does vary enormously day to day. So I only take notice on weigh in day, after the second fast. They are good but I did find that the fat % didn't always read! until someone on here posted that it's best to have damp feet, so now it's no problem.
I have a Beurer scales. They seem to be accurate on the fat, barely varying from day to day, but overall getting lower. The weight part can be jittery depending on how much you wriggle. The readings can also be sent to your PC so you have a trendline as well.
Along with most Body fat scales they can't measure over 50% body fat as the fat is too dense for the elctrical signal to get through. When I first used them I thought they were broken because they wouldn't show my body fat. I just had a Body fat percentage that was over 50%.
Yikes, I. Just did the calculation and 39% of my body is fat!! It's all on my hips and arse

Oh well ...may be I'll forget about this one for a while
I'm still at 43% and quite chuffed at that, seeing I was over 50%.

The calculator says 37% but my scales say 34%, so it's not very accurate!
Ooo Carorees - I hope you're right :-)

Oops...just realized I'd entered my height wrong (unit conversion failure). Now the calculator says 29 (scales say 34).
Oh well, you win some, you lose some!

thanks for letting me know :like: :like:
