I've been doing 16:8 for 5 months now, most weeks combined with one low calorie, low carb day, with good success. I find my appetite, which had been greatly reduced by 8 months on 5:2 has remained reduced. However, I wonder whether, had I started out with 16:8 rather than 5:2, my appetite would not have reduced and so 16;8 would have been less successful?

Have any of you any experience/thoughts?

I have been doing 16:8 on and off (with low carb and 5:2 or 4:3). I do think it affects your appetite. However being on holiday this week I have not fasted in the traditional sense, just one meal a day (a sort of Fast-5). Not low carb though (hard on holiday). I have certainly felt the difference in appetite. It has reduced again and I have been feeling rather overfull, although that might be something to do with having two courses every day :lol: I doubt I have lost weight this week but I have enjoyed it enough to think about continuing when I get back.

And a reply to Navwoman. No, that is not the diet I was referring to,I don't think anyway. I shall do some research and try to find it again (to be honest, I had forgotten about it..and this post)
Carorees, I think that you did the best thing, by starting with the 5;2. It kind of gets your head round it all a lot better and makes you far more aware of what you actually put in your mouth. I find that if I am doing a 16:8, i fast for 16,17,18 hours, then when I do eat, I think 'oooh, I've done the hard bit (which isn't that hard anyway, to be fair)I could just eat a couple of peanuts...or whatever.
5;2 is a lot better for the discipline, in my humble opinion

I have just researched what I was talking about Navwoman, and yes it is that one by Julian Whitaker, I just didn't recognise it from the excert that you posted.
It was either that or the 2 day diet and I think that I would have written the 2 day diet.
So basically, it's what we all do anyway, with some excercise thrown in!! :confused:

Have read through this thread and think i have my head around it but just checking to ensure I'm on the right track...

I've been 5:2ing about 3/4 weeks and really enjoying it, however I am aware that if I have any kind of 'event' at a weekend (like the weekend just gone) my eating just goes all to pot, especially when there is a copious amount of wine involved. I DO NOT want to go on a diet as such, I don't want to restrict my weekends because I know what happens is that i do that for so long , hit a goal weight and then think 'yay, diets over' and eat for England until I've put that and more back on. I want to just enjoy a WOE/WOL which in turn, over time, results in weight loss.

The 16:8 interests me because I don't really like or fancy breakfast that much. I occasionally wake and feel I need it but rarely and actually I think i kind of 16:8 at weekends anyway because i tend not to have anything until about 3pm (but then maybe on wine and crisps at 10pm) So, my way of thinking is fast monday or Tuesday (me and my bf vary our fast day depending on my work)and the other day have my first thing to eat at about 12pm/1pm, so maybe a cup a soup or whatever I've brought for lunch and some crackers, then eat again at dinner at 7pm ish which is likely to be a decent sized meal and then not eat again until lunchtime the next day...is this right? If my 'window' is less than 8 hours does this matter? If I ate today at 1pm and then again at 6pm and then don't eat again until 1pm tomorrow does that make a difference?

I hope what i'm asking makes sense? it seems very agaist all the conventional dieting advice of never miss a meal! :)

The way you are doing it is fine Claire. Just remember to eat an overall balanced diet with enough food for your TDEE (which I'm sure you do anyway). That's the revelation of 5:2, 4;3, 16:8 or any other permutation, suddenly you learn it's OK to eat when hungry and not to the clock or habit - not hungry? Then don't eat until you are. Hungry but not convenient, fasting day? Eat later. It's great and a liberation to realise we are in control and not food (at long last for me).

Hi I am loving the 5:2 diet however I keep losing the same 3 LBs on fast days and it goes back on on feast days. I am probably eating too many calories on feast days but I really cant face calorie counting ( I get obsessed) I always used to eat breakfast and could never go without it but 5:2 has changed that. I am planning to try 16/8 on feast days and 2 5:2 days this week and see how it goes. Or I might at weekends do the Azureblue way.

@Ballerina can davise more on this but sounds like you have a good plan in mind anyway @crazyfool- make sure you know what your TDEE is - even if you aren't counting calories, it helps to have a 'number' in mind.

Hi @crazyfool I also Hate counting calories which is why I have an eating window every day. 5:2 worked very well for me but I found that I was naturally slipping into a window, at first it was 16/8 but I find that more and more my window is getting shorter, a lot of the time I have just one meal, a substantial meal but nevertheless just one. @Barbarita started the 'fast5' thread and that is great to browse through, lots of tips etc. I have also found that by limiting my carb intake I can more easily manage to maintain my weight so between low carb/high fat/moderate protein and a window, for me, I find it a winning combination. Another little tip is to try and not break your fast with carbs as they just send you into carb fest that can run out of control. So, forget counting calories, forget eating breakfast, forget nibbling late in the evening and good luck,

@silverdarling my TDEE is 1600 for sedentary which at the moment I am .Thank you for your reply.

@Ballerina thanks your reply is so helpful.

I am really looking forward to see if this way will work for me. I am out tonight for my friends birthday so I will start on Sunday as I might be a little bit delicate tomorrow.

Interesting reading
Am trying to stick to 16/8 and 5/2
Did this last year and it really worked for me
I too find keeping carbs low works well
If I eat protein and lots of low calorie salad and veg and a bit of fruit I lose wright
My problem is snacking
I can eat my body weight in nuts so have decided not too eat any
I know they are healthy but still think too many is not good
What is fast 5?

HI @Sarahg glad to see you get back into things again. Fast-5 is just an eating window like 16/8 but instead of having an 8 hour eating 'window' you reduce it to a 5 hour 'window' so a sort of 19/5 if you like. A lot of people do this truncated version as it certainly reduces the amount you can ingest in one day. Quite often I only eat one meal in a day, admittedly a substantial meal but nevertheless just the one. I find that most days I am more than happy with this and it is usually eaten quite late, around anywhere from 3-7pm, much earlier and I find I am getting peckish again. I have been on holiday for a few days and have just been doing 16:8
And haven't fasted but I think I have eaten quite a lot in the 8 hour window and feel like I have put on weight
Will fast tomorrow
I feel like doing something different
Maybe I should try fast 5
Do I do it every day of the week
