Bedside vigil
14 May 2014, 17:46
I got back from Adelaide this morning and went to work. Before the 5th lesson, around midday, the office lady came up to the classroom to say that the OH had rung to say my mother is gravely ill and I'd better go up to the nursing home immediately.

She is 93. Before I went to Adelaide, last week, I hadn't been able to see her because the nursing home was in 'lockdown' due to gastro. She did get a bit of gastro but that isn't what she's dying from now. They said 'old age'. In other words, they don't know and I don't suppose it matters. She is now breathing heavily and sometimes there are those long gaps when you wonder if she's going to take another breath. They have given her morphine.

I went home about 6 and had some dinner and came back about 8.30. I am dozing or not in the recliner chair beside her bed. I don't want to leave. My sister is flying in from Melborne in the morning so I will rest then. It is now 3.45am.

I was planning to fast today after missing my fast on Monday, but one of the staff has been really caring and left sandwiches and a plate of biscuits. I have eaten some biscuits. Perhaps I'll just give it a break until all this resolves itself.

Sally, just be there for your Mum and your sister.
At times like these, thoughts of ordinary life go out of the window and I know you're probably feeling conflicting emotions. Well, I did when Dad died. It was so sudden with Mum there was not time for questioning.
My thoughts are with you and, though I am not a praying person, I shall send you positive vibes xx
