Success!! I have printed out an application form for a summer festival. I could have emailed it to them, but they want a cheque (how antiquated!), so it was the catalyst for getting a new printer!

@silverdarling hub has a laptop with a big screen and it's very nice to work at. If you want to be mobile, go with something like this

Penny I'm glad you found your motivation to get on the treadmill. have you thought of giving it a name like Janeg's MadMax (rowing machine)?

I shall think of a name tomorrow, @SainS while I'm on it.
The Slim pasta is OK, isn't it? Not quite as 'fishy' either!

Wow @PennyForthem that does look a fab laptop-and-a-half :victory: - with a price to match  @Carieoates - not sure if I will need a big screen as such yet, but will need something clear and comfortable to work at ... Just beginning to think about all of this stuff, as just started some online training today, and it will take probably up to a year before I will be taking on any work, and at the start I will be 'moonlighting' and running it alongside the 'day' job ...

PFM - name for treadmill - the PennyFarthing??

@Silverdarling hi! hubs working life was in computers and IT and we have an IMac as well as an IPad and iPhones, we are a very apple oriented household. It took him some time to come to the conclusion that Apple have the best technology and security around. Me? I don't care, he chooses that technical stuff and I chose the handbags, works for me every time. Now, if only Louis Vuitton or Gucci did computers.............mmmm......

@Silverdarling I'm lucky here that all the blokes are very IT savvy and they build their own computers. In fact Martyn built his first one, with a small bit of supervision, when he was 10 years old. So if I ever need a PC to do something special, I just ask and the part is delivered the next day and I'm upgraded.

If you want a decent computer you need to talk to a decent proffessional, not a PC World school leaver. Hubby and the lads use http://www.scan.co.uk/ they will even build a PC for you to your specification. A bit hard when you aren't sure what you want it to do though.

If you want your PC to do just accounts, emails and to run a web shop, I would say that all modern PC's are capable of that. If you are a graphic designer or heavily into photoshop or are a web designer you will need better graphics than a base level PC will give.

Then there is the aspect of programmes on your PC. Using Microsoft operating system is what is normally done, then most mainstream programmes will latch on to it with ease (such as Sage Accounting software or your word, excel etc), but Microsoft programmes really start to add up cost wise. You can go for Open Source programmes, the Open office programme is very well thought of which are either free or very cheap if you want a disk with the programmes on instead of downloading from the internet.

Or go for a Mac.

@Pennyforthem Can you copy the internet page you need to print off, onto a flash drive or CD and take it to the printer that will work the PC for printing off?

If I'm way behind, blame the tabs. I forgot to click on Submit before I had dinner and watched a film.

@SilverdarlingI've just got a new computer from a company called PC Specialist, you can choose your own components from a list and if you are not sure what you need you can phone their help line and they will talk through what you want it for and offer advice. Even if you don't buy from them the helpline would be great to give you a start. My OH has had a couple of computers from them as he does a lot of video editing of holidays etc. No I am not related to anyone there.

Wow - as usual forumites the people to ask about practically anything  :victory: thanks for these responses - am nowhere near swapping yet, but just beginning to think of options ... I will be asking for advice from freelancers who work in the sector I'm aiming to join as well, as they will be 'the horse's mouth'. But probably coming back to the forum at some point in the future, as I know a lot of you are freelancers as well :like:

I'm with you @Ballerina on the sod the computers. I gave up with the intimate knowledge of their inside when we stopped trading as a PC repair and sales shop. I just holler for help when anything goes wrong, and if its not fixed fast I make their lives hell.

But I'm not a handbag girl, give me a lovely piece of sanded nicely grained wood any day. There are a multitude of things to do with wood. All you can do with a handbag is carry too much junk or whack someone across the head with it.
