I agree with gillymary, when you have something monumentous such as this happen to you, your confidence takes a big knock and while in hospital you start to feel well again and think you are ok, when home your friend will suddenly realise all that additional support of all the drs and nurses are not there now, so I think if he lives on his own a live in nurse for at least a couple of weeks until his confidence and strength is stronger is not at all to much to ask. X
I think that we all agree that he needs a nurse for 2-4 weeks. Now, won't it be fun when his son tries to persuade him, LOL! He is very independent (although his son is only two floors up and always keeps an eye on him) and stubborn.
He is our favourite father-of-friend. He always cooks for us and gives us tomatoes and lettuce from his garden. The first time I saw him in the ICU he told me "go to my garden and pick up some basil leaves".
When my hubby had been really poorly he was very insecure and scared when he got home. He had nagged and nagged to be let home but the world suddenly seemed to feel very big and scary! He wouldn't necessarily need full nursing care but possibly a companion or personal carer just for a week or so until he finds his feet. In the old days people having major surgery would have a couple of weeks in a convalescent home before they went home but now hospitals can't wait to get you out so people are often actually still poorly when they get home. What is community care like in Greece?
The good thing is that the Sexy Surgeon (mmmmm I like the sound of that) is not rushing things at all. He kept him in the ICU two days longer than the usual and he told his son twice that he will keep him for as long as it takes. Only when he is fully recovered he will be released, he is definitely taking the scenic route.
There is zero community care in Greece from the government but Greeks are very caring for their neighbours, relatives, friends etc. For example, one of his neighbours (she is a nurse) goes to the hospital and shaves him every couple of days, because he can't do it on his own with all the cables and tubes. He will have lots of help but I feel that he will need someone there 24/7 for a few days.
Yes, my friends hubby had a big bypass op and he is 74. He was sent home in less than a week but with the community nurse to visit daily. He ended up back in twice! Just minor problems with his wound but you can't help but wonder if they would actually save more cash by doing a proper job in the first place!
That's what the yummy doctor wants to avoid, he told us several times that he wants to send him home and see him in a month for follow up, not sooner!
Definitely some sort of help for as long as possible. My mum was still feeling tired and weak 2 months after. They get tired very quickly, and the confidence does take a knock. If there are people nearby who can help that is good - sort out a rota?? Miffy is right about them getting chucked out too early, so it is good he's being kept in longer.

(And of course this means you can keep seeing SS a bit longer  )
Seriously? I only wish he was an eye doctor or something, I'd invent a pain to go see him. But a heart surgeon... what should I say? My heart aches?
Or... my heart beats faster when I see sexy men. Feel it, it happens right now!!! :-)

Pffffffffffffffft
.... Has he got any unmarried brothers? Or other male relatives??
... (Just thinking laterally - haha!)
OK, so here I go today for a short visit. I arrive at the room and seconds later there he is, with his smart shirt and his Tods-a-like loafers and his sexy smile and I couldn't help but say "were you waiting for me to show up?" and he said "so it seems". Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh...
My friend told me that he likes talking to me because I know lots about medical stuff, especially the heart.
Behave yourself!

Ballerina x
I am behaving when I'm there, am I supposed to behave on here as well???
