daydreamer you do need an adults hoop it is almost impossible with a child's one. I think the size and a bit of weight make a difference.

Daydreamer, get a proper adult hoop and its much easier to learn. Childrens hoops are too small, too light and often badly balanced as well. They are like what the professionals use but they are tough to master at first. The biggest mistake beginners make us thinking its about gyrating hips - it's not that action you need at all. The forwards and back motion is best described as like pumping up an airbed with a foot pump. Essentially you 'bump' the hoop forward with the front of one hip, then 'bump' it back with the back of the other hip. Easier shown than described!
You tube is great for guides. I muddled through to learn on my own but my hubby and children picked it up easily by watching me.
Check out hyper loop hoops; that's where I got my last hoop and had great service.

Oh thank you. I am definitely going to get one and watch the videos, never been able to hula hoop (except on the wii) and always so envious of anyone that can. All mine must have been too light. Let's have a hula hooping club thread
My belly button is only 35 inches from the ground, does that sound right? I've just ordered one and will see how it goes. I think I should have gone for the larger one, then the lads could have used it as well. I may phone them up and change my order.
I have an adult size weighted hula hoop which I picked up on clearance at Walmart for $7. It was in the exerrcise aisle near all the hand weights and workout videos. I still can't hula hoop a lick and I remember being quite good at it when I was younger. My daughter (16yo) uses it a lot. She will put on a TV show or movie and stand there the entire time hooping and never even dropping it once. Even when someone walks through the room and she moves out of their way. She never misses a beat. Incredible to me since I can't get the thing to spin around more than 3 or 4 times before it drops to the ground.
We have a Wii and I like to do the virtual hula hoop on there. It is a calorie roaster as it says when you finish if it gives you 3 or 4 stars for your performance.
There is a type of black tube that you can buy at the hardware store and make your own hoop. It is much more reasonably priced to do that and then you add metallic tape to make it pretty. I will see if I can find the link again.

that's a good idea Tweaker, I got DH to buy me one on E Bay but I'm sure he could have made me one. Wildmissus I'm not so clever, When I was doing it the other way this morning I tried to see what I was doing and the answer is exactly what I do to do it anti clockwise the only difference is I start the with my left hand instead of my right hand hope that helps.
Another tip - put one foot/hip forward.
Thanks Nessie. I always put my left foot forward to get started, then bring it in. I'll try with my right foot and see what happens.

I'm watching my 16yo daughter text, hoop and watch a movie while telling her little brother to get out of her way. Cell phone in one hand and TWO remotes in the other! (She said she might neeed to pause it or turn it up when I asked.) She's quite a multi-tasker!
I made my hoop using irrigation tubing and colored tape - with some water in it to weight it - there are lots of instructional videos on how to do it on YouTube I think - plus you can make different sizes and weights as you get better.. I need to get back into it while watching tv It is a great exercise .. Will never do hoop dancing though - I am not that graceful lol
Added later - just did 5 minutes and yikes my hips are yelling at me - may take awhile to get back to a whole tv program

I am going to Argos to get one tomorrow!
I've been advised not to try for too long at first due to my hips!
But it should be fun x

I watched some girls hooping at a festival last year and was very envious. I've just measured myself now going to look online, would love to be able to hula hoop properly
I can hoop to the left easily - my hooping to the right sucks right now - will get it back soon I'm sure though - I got out of the habit of hooping because it was just too hot this summer...
I am still hoola hooping every day but not always twice a day. I will wait until I have been doing it a month before measuring. I do feel I am a bit firmer in the middle, that may be wishful thinking.
Can I join the group?
I don't have a hoop but have a Wii. Does that count?
I must admit I look a bit of a plonked and certainly not very lady like!!!
