Re: Couch to 5k

I think it was @ADFnFuelwho remarked earlier that the program moves too fast. Well, I just did Week 5 Day 1, and it was fine but I can't see doing three 5 minute runs and then two 8 minute runs and then a 20 minute run all in one week. I'll either hurt myself or just burn out. So I'm going to do a week - three workouts - of Week 5 day 1, then a week of Week 5 Day 2, and THEN I think I'll be ready for a 20 minute run.

I'm in no rush. My plan is to do a 5K race in late November. Or maybe I'll be tempted to do one at the end of July. If I feel ready. We'll see....

It moves ok for a while and then it kinda jumps up quickly. But, try to do it. You might surprise yourself! I don't think I did the whole 20 minute run, but I think I was able to do it by just taking one walking interval in between. And then after only finishing 7 weeks, I did a 5K with just a couple of short walking intervals. You should really sign up for a 5K now. It will help motivate you! I definitely wouldn't wait until November!

Agree. Community 5K's happen every weekend throughout the summer. If apprehensive - and who isn't the first time? - go watch one and chat with the people around the start line. You'll find that you'll have far more in common with them than you'd think.

Okay, consider me peer pressured!
I'll keep you posted. Gray day here, and I've decided to put my run off till tomorrow. That conveniently puts off my decision of which workout to do as well...

Well, @Wendyjane, how did it go?

I have only gone and signed myself up for a 10k run tomorrow. Yikes, what have I let myself in for! I am just about doing the 5k now, after completing the c25k programme about a month ago. Oh well, I can always walk the last 5k, or hopefully run/walk it. I just hope my niggly knee and hip hold up. I also hope that the flippin shock absorber bar strap holds up as it's spontaneously pinged the last 2 times I've worn it.

Good luck with the 10K Scuba! I'm sure you'll do great!

@Scubachick, I'm a bit mortified - I haven't run in 4 days, and this afternoon doesn't look like an option. Life just got in the way. So, at this point, tomorrow I will definitely need to repeat the three 5 minute runs day (Week 5 Day 1) again, as I've been doing C25K now since the beginning of May, and this is the first time I have slacked off like this.
But I should probably aim for a 5K at the end of July, because I ought to be ready by then, and indeed that will be a motivator.

How was the 10K, Scuba?

@wendyjane I did wk5 run 1 twice and then moved on to run 2 today. It's easier than you think as long as you pace yourself. Though I will probably run it again a couple of times before the 20 minutes.

I've done Week 5 Day 2 twice now, @Brand-ie, and I'm contemplating going for day 3 tomorrow. I will check in and let you all know... bit nervous. I'm so slow, I wouldn't even know how to pace myself. If I ran any slower, I'd probably fall over

That's pacing yourself LOL You don't go off too quick. I do go faster on the very last 60 seconds of the second 8 minutes if i have enough energy left.

24 days till I do my first 5k charity run. Been doing C25K in and did since last nov. So I wasn't sure where to restart from. I've been doing 5min runs with 1-3 min walk to get me back into the swing if it. Wasn't too bad to be honest.
Great to see some enthusiastic newbies.
@Wendyjane you prob with phone was prob just a gremlin on there.

Thanks in part to all your support, I RAN FOR 20 MINUTES STRAIGHT TODAY! Sorry, I thought that was deserving of the caps...

Indeed it wasn't so bad. Of course, I'm pretty sure that a healthy fit larger person could have walked at the speed at which I was running. Still proud.

I'm thinking about starting this as I know I need to do more activity ... Not sure though, I never run anywhere, even if the bees chase me ! It would have to be on a treadmill which is lurking in my office and I don't really enjoy, as we have no pavement / sidewalk and it's also rather hilly round here ! Just looking at the hills puts me off...... Walking up the nearest one nearly finishes me off, luckily there are some benches at the top, conveniently in a pub garden ! I might give it a go, (and the pub). what do you think ?

I say run, @mrstee! I had never been a runner when I started this program.

I may still not be, but I'm getting there. Now I understand why the 20 minute run is followed by a 5, 8, 5 increments run. Even though I did the 20 minute day two days ago, I wasn't recovered from it, so today's seemed harder than the 20 minutes straight.
